I do something similar to Gene by measuring the first 15 feet of line including the taper, I then weigh it on the grain scale if is correct go back 1 foot and cut the line, then the back of the fly line I cut the rest of the belly off 1 foot before the back taper then weld the front piece to the back portion thus retaining the original running line. Works like a charm. The only big difference in doing it this way is that the heavier lines 9 and10 weights are very much thicker than the normal 2 and three weight ( belly) lines. For warm water fishing not a problem in the presentation but may not be as soft for a delicate presentation.
