Winchester has developed the .17 Winchester Super Magnum, it's a rimfire, and supposed to be better than the .17 HMR.

Today I picked up a Remington 41 single shot rifle in pretty good condition with a bright bore. I love these old guns and now will have something to shoot standard velocity with. The date code on this one indicates Oct. 1932.

Panfisher1.......... I know two people that have a .22 conversion for the 1911A1. They do work, but it seems they do not function 100 %. They always seem to be fiddling with different ammo and spring tension to make them more reliable. I looked at getting one a few years back, but opted instead to buy a GSG 1911-.22. This is a German made pistol that doesn't cost much more than a conversion kit. Mine is very reliable and is more accurate than I expected. It will function with most any bulk ammo, but is near 100% reliable with CCI mini-mags. (I have only had a couple failure-to-fire out of about 600 rounds). It is the same size and feel as a full size 1911A1 (just a little bit lighter)..........Don in SC

I'm with Don. I picked up a Ruger Mark I target model that is very accurate and isn't fussy about the ammo I use. The feel is like a Luger instead of my .45, but it's a nice pistol.

My Colt M-4 OPS .22 is not a conversion rifle but it is picky about ammo, as well as cleanliness and temperature. It has a bolt speed nut which has to be adjusted for the different ammo and I played with it some but really mostly chased my tail because I was trying to do it while shooting ammo the gun didn't like anyway. I got mad one day and through a box full of CCI Stingers though it and they fed flawlessly and so did a box or two of CCI Velocitors. Such ammo is costly, but when you compare it to a 5.56 version, it is still cheaper. I have run a few hundred CCI Mini Mags through it and the only time it failed was a few times when the temps were cold.

I still think the gun is a good one, but a Ruger 10-22 is better, and cheaper. My 10-22 still fails sometimes but for the most part, it works great.

I agree with the posts above where the Ruger and Browning .22 semi auto handguns are a better gun to buy than a conversion. My Buckmark functions great.

Thanks for the input gentlemen, very much appreciate it going to have to think hard on the decision to purchase a conversion kit for my Taurus PT1911 ... I can get one from a private seller at a really reduced price .. He's going to let me install it on my auto pistol and try it out b4 buying it ...taking it to the indoor shooting range this am with a box of CCI mini mags ..we shall see ...

Talking about auto pistols I watched American Riflemen other day and they
Had a segment on the broom handle pistol..man would like to own that firearm ..

I have a conversion kit for a CZ-75 and it seems 100 percent reliable . Because I have another one in 9mm, I keep the conversion in the other full time.

If your carry gun has a kit available it is well worth it to have a kit and shoot the 22 frequently. Way cheaper. However, you can't really memorize 2 different timings in recoil control. Always end your session with the larger caliber to better remember that feel. You will be faster and more accurate with the 22 at speed, which is a little aggravating. I often keep a 22 for HD just because it handles so well and over penetration is less of a concern. Check out performance tests on Velociter ammo if you think 22 is not sufficient for HD.

As others have said, with the 22 kit you own 1 1/2 guns and you will start thinking I could have had 2 guns for just a little more. But a different gun does not allow you any training for your carry gun.

I would not have a kit that required the extractor to be changed even for the carry gun. Better a conversion as a complete upper. Don

Don ..
Very good advice as always .. My carry is a Glock M30 which out of box is the most
Accurate weapon i have ever seen ...the M30 is first gen its about six years old now.. I ended up after using the conversion kit on the PT1911 buying it ... I could not refuse the price I paid for it..the unit is made by a company name Ceinier specializing in conversion kits for a few different weapon platforms .. The unit performed flawlessly, not one hiccup ..that's putting approximately 90 rounds of CCI mini mags through it ..What also impressed me was the adjustable rear sight .. I hear ya re practicing with your carry weapon, your absolutely right, but I have this infatuation with 1911 platforms ..finest pistol ever made .. Now I just learned that this company produces a conversion kit for the Glock 30 ....it never ends does it?
Thanks again
Paul

Just added a new Ruger 10-22 in stainless with a 22" barrel and a checkered birch stock. This thing weighs in at 5.75lbs. At least it comes with studs already mounted for a sling. Should be a tack driver. I've got an old Weaver Marksman 4 power to mount on it. Still a nice clear scope.

High standard model gb
high standard sentinel nine shot revolver
and the new addition that I bought for the kid :rollin A browning 1911-22 which has turned out to be a great gun and very fun to shoot.

South Carolina...I've owned a Model 24 ULA in .270 Win as well. Melvin's a character, he'll keep you on the phone for an hour if you'll listen. I've had the .22 since 1997. Not very pretty and doesn't have the finish of the Coopers (had three of those too), but it's a serious hunter's rifle.

Funny story about the .270. I went on a DNR deer hunt back in the early 90's. We went to a range on the property to check zero. My turn came up and the DNR officer said I had one shot about 2 1/2" high but I missed the target with my other two shots...went down to the target, three shots inside 1/2". The guy was astonished.

JB

I am in South Carolina as well.

I met Melvin at the NRA convention in Charlotte-if I remember correctly.

I have heard nothing but good things about his rifles. As you stated-they are serious hunter's tools.
