I've been spending most of my time on still water lately and decided it was high time the headwaters of my local river got a visit. The last time I did this it was with a fly rod but this time it would be an UL spin outfit; Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 1000 and a Quantum 5.0 Telecast (QXTELS505UL..FB3) rod. For lures I used Trout Magnets and Berkley Atomic Tubes.
As I worked up stream, I was reminded of what pure joy fishing an isolated, small, river could be. The road isn't far away but from the river all you can see is nature. Chubs, sunfish, largemouth and perch were all very willing to take my offerings. In addition to the usual assortment of birds and snakes, an angry beaver emerged from the river bank to let me know he wasn't happy with my intrusion on his "turf". Was glad not to run into any black bears. Last time one appeared to be stalking me and I had to quickly bushwhack back to my car to get away. I'm better at remembering my bear spray since then.
Fly fishing is still my first love but I've got a strong crush on UL spin. The simplicity allowed me to focus more on the stream and less on dealing with snagged back casts and such.
