I’ve always considered great blue herons to be my fishing partners. So often we’re the only ones on the water. A while back I read about a guy who tossed a fish to a nearby heron. After that the bird was less spooky and would stay close to occasionally be rewarded with a meal.

Today I hit a new pond that just wasn’t producing. Finally got a hit and as I netted a nice crappie I notice movement to my left. A heron landing to check things out yet keeping a safe distance. Departing from my usual C&R the crappie was tossed on the bank halfway between us. Two flaps and the great blue was on the fish and then off to a far bank to lunch in private.

I love fishing, even when I get only one fish.

Several years ago there was an heron who stayed around a local pond. When a fly fisherman started fishing the heron would come within 30' hoping to get thrown a tasty bream. I fed it quite a few over time. That was one smart, spoiled bird!

When I read the thread title, I figured you were using a well-trained (or very stiff) heron as a spear. Your photos were great but, in the context of my (obviously confused) expectations, somewhat anticlimactic. :lol

Down here, when you catch a fish they come up to you looking for a hand out. I dropped a 10" Jack Crevalle that was inhaled as soon as it hit the ground!

:lol :lol I had one stay within a few feet of me in Florida when I was flyfishing......everytime I caught a fish he would ease up a little closer. I was doing the typical catch and release (had no idea about size restrictions anyway)...finally caught a small yellow "minnow-ish" looking fish and tossed it to him....worst mistake ever ..the bird followed me the entire time I was fishing....got to the point that I thought he was gonna get in my stripping basket....very friendly critters and not at all spooky. This happened on two different days.....too stupid to think about taking pics. Thanks for bringing back good memories.

Joe: :lol Great story!

By the way, Knotty, that photo of the dead tree is truly amazing. I keep coming back to it.
