I have a custom rolled McFarland fiberglass spin blank I’m building for my brother.
5’ 6” for 2-4# line.
I’d have no problems if this was a flyrod but I’ve never built a spining rod in my life.
I’ve talked and emailed a couple techs at Mudhole and they suggest the following for guides: ( I wanted to use waveguides but they don’t make them small enough for this rod)
CBR LZR Model YR..size 20,12, & 8
Then move to CBR LZR model R
6(choke guide) then 5’s the rest of the way including the tip top.
Doesn’t make sense to me and I didn’t question them at the time with what I’m about going to ask, I might call them back about this but I want your guys input on it
Seems to me once you come out of the choke guide a #6 you would step down to a #5 and then the rest would be #4’s especially on a rod this light.
Reel is a Pflueger President 500.

Probably a bit late to the party, but here's Joe Robinson's original "Aetna Foulproof" guides recommendation: 5 guides total, top 2 same size - 5/32", 1/4", 1/2", and 3/4". My first rod was built following these guide lines.
"REC Recoil" guides - 7, 8 low, 10 and 20. My second rod was built accordingly, but w/o REC guides.
My third rod is built using 4, 6 low, 12 and 16.
Good luck.
