Brent, my girlfriend has a close friend up in Ft. Fairfield, Maine. If it all works out she and I may make it up there for a visit later this year. If that happens, you and I need to get together and entertain the li'l fishies for a while.

When I have either a #too big# fly on, or some sinificant split shot, I adjust my stroke. There is a rotation or "orbit" of the weight, around the fly line, and you have to wait for it to git back in line before you come forward.

As long as you have space for these back casts, it works. Forget the roll cast though--unless you massively overline the system.

(overlining always works--up until you try to cast more distance).

These are my thoughts after becoming "technical" this year...

I think it may be a bit easier but not totally sure. I have a couple of 2 wts and 3 3 wts. the 2's are 7' and 8' both medium action they will cast ok up to about a size 8-10 dry or 10-12 nymph as does my 7'6" 3wt. I have a fast action ( Hardy Zenith 8' 3 and 9' Zephyrus) they will easily throw a weighted #8 stone fly and big bushy Stimi's. don't know if this helps one thing that will is what was stated above adjusting your casting stroke will help a bit.

Yes, I am late to the party. But I will put in my reply. I stick with 12-16 size flies.
