Some people like the "patina" that grungy cork gives to an old classic rod. I'm not one of them. I just got the 2 wt UltraFine today and the cork was nasty. I thought I'd show what a little piece of green ScotchBrite can do along with some dish soap: Here's the dirty cork soaking for a few minutes with water and Dawn dishwashing soap on it With half the cork scrubbed you can see the difference--clean on top, ugly on the bottom Cleaned and dried Before and After shots:

I've used a Magic Eraser before and it worked very well with out using any chemicals or abrasives.

I swear by ERA laundry detergent to clean cork.. and a fine grit simulated sandpaper.
Numerous rods of mine have been made cleaned (and smelling good) from ERA.

It is my experience that at the point you show the cork soaking for a bit in dawn/water, a gentle scrubbing with a kitchen nylon bristle brush easily returns the cork to new condition.

Gene, It's a Mr. Clean product (there are also others out there) and are available at Wal-Mart and other grocery type stores.

available at fine retailers everywhere
my wife has a box of them. they're great for crayon marks, scuffs, etc. we have 4 kids that are 7 years old and under so she uses these a lot. you just get it wet, wring most of the water out and rub. it took maybe 90 seconds to clean the SPLCA in the picture above. if you look at the top of the "before" pic, you can actually see the magic eraser. it is the white textured thing at the edge of the towel.

I have a Cabelas Three Forks 7'6" 3wt that I bought 35-45 years ago and it has never been cleaned . The cork was starting to chip off in spots so to keep the stains and nostalgia from yesteryear I epoxied it last night . This should make it last the rest of my life and I can relive those memories every time I look at it .
I will be picking up that eraser for my newer rods though .

Magic Eraser is an amazing product that lives up to the hype. Good for so many things. It’s a micro abrasive made from melamine foam (Corelle unbreakable dishes are melamine).
One word of warning. Do not use it to clean vinyl boat seats. Gets them very clean but also invisibly removes the UV protective layer, leading to complete material breakdown. Keep this in mind when cleaning other things. Magic Eraser May be removing more than you realize.

I have a custom 5 weight that had poor quality cork so I dug out all the hard parts then rubbed another cork bottle stopper with sandpaper, mixed this with some glue and filled the holes, sand papered The lumps down then used polyurethane over the handle smoothed it down with fine sand paper gave it a seconed coat. Many have commented on the unique finish and to end it all it has been very well used and is preserved without having to clean it. Long story but worthwhile.
