It seems this forum doesn't have a Poll feature so I'd like to create a quick ad-hoc poll on what size tippet you generally use for bream.
-- 7x -- 6x -- 5x -- 4x -- 3x -- 2x -- 1x -- Other, please specify
I'd also be interested to know if the tippet you use is flouro or nylon.

I don't do the 'X' thing anymore as most the quality of most tippet varies and could be misleading. Really, only the very expensive tippet material can be trusted and I can't afford it. I guess my Bass/spin/steelhead fishing past lead me to Maxima fishing lines on my spinning/casting reels. I trust them. I make all my furled leaders (except fluorocarbon) from Maxima fishing lines and I use Maxima fishing line for tippet too.
For general bluegill (and light trout/average fly size applications) duty, I just use 4lb Ultra Green Maxima for tippet on a furled leader made from 6lb Maxima Ultra Green.
For midges/BWO and other really fine flies whether at bluegills or light trout, I use 3lb Maxima Ultra Green....which is more information than you asked for I know.

6 or 8lb Stren XL maybe I'd catch more Bream on a lighter tippet but the Bass around here are annoying at times and wont leave my Bream offerings alone

Generally, 5x nylon (Frog Hair or more recently SA Freshwater). It also depends on pickyness of fish, size of fly and wind.

Thanks for posting everyone. I plan on using 5x myself, but was interested to know other people's habits.

You can make a poll, when you click new topic, you scroll down past the text box in the editor, the poll creation is below that.
I use 4x Orvis Super Strong mostly with two leader formulas that I use most often, the Orvis lite butt, and a panfish taper. If I tie up a dry fly specific leader, which isn't often, then it will be Orvis 5x.

Thanks for the instructions on how to create a poll. Looked around for the feature but I guess I missed it somehow.

if you're going to use 5x, i'd recommend the 4lb. test p-line halo flourocarbon. use it for trout with no issues. basically the equivalent of 5x tippet. plus you can get 200 yds. for about $22.

Dpenrod: Thanks for the suggestions, but I already have 4x, 5x, and 7x Orvis Mirage flouro I was going to use.

8 lb Maxima Ultra Green. If a LMB takes it I can fight him too.

pearow wrote: brim don't care-p- Gene is absolutely correct. That's why I use 1X tippet because bream and bass are not leader shy. I use a heavier leader than most people because that way I have fewer breakoffs when the fly gets tangled in brush or when it gets frayed. A number of times I have caught nice size bass, crappie and catfish while fishing for bream, fish that would have broken the line if I were using a smaller leader.
