Oh my say it isn't so...
OK enough of that.
We've all been asked one rod, one gun, one car, one whatever.
What about one fish species? I know some have favorites and I'm
only asking because this question just popped into my head.
I'll start.
Even though I've been developing a love for the Bluegill family
lately (ever since I pulled out the two weight) they are eager to take a fly
fight well, plentiful, and taste good.
But....
I think at this time I would still pick trout over the mighty Bluegill.

Bowfin. I've only caught one on my 4-wt fly rod, a 7.26#. But that one was enough to tell me that it is the meanest fighting fish around.

Vaal River small mouth yellow fish. Terrific fighters but have only caught on 5 weight, would love to go back to South Africa one more time with a 3 weight in hand.

Bluegill for me!
I can catch them on the fly rod most of the year (when there's no ice), and the big ones never fail to put up a good fight.

Without a doubt for me it's Suwannee Bass, I can fish for them year around, they bite year around, they hammer both top waters and subsurface patterns, at times their stubborn and make you work for a bite, they fight hard jump and bulldog you into the current and cypress stumps, they live in Beautiful clear water rivers here in Florida are a Colorful Beautiful fish and most of all their the perfect size to really test you on a 3wt and make you sweat out a battle with a 2wt ( average Suwannee Bass are 12"s and 1 1/2lbs State record is 3lbs 14oz )
I've caught everything from Bluegill to Tarpon on fly but when I dream at night it's a Suwannee bending my fly rod.

The bluegill are willing and often plentiful enough to provide constant action and enjoyment. If getting down to one, however, I'm going to go with the brookie. Not the line striping thrill of a bow or pissed off brown, but always a delight to find and reward with brilliant color. Plus, I enjoy being in the places they live.

I have to admit that my "favorite" swings a little, but the top few are carp, 'gills, brookies, and smallies. All of which are excellent fun on any tackle from 2 through 6wt. If I break out the cane in these lighter weights, it's brookies all the way. 'Gills a close second but brookies on small streamers or attractor dries just cannot be beat.

(IMHO.)

I'd have to agree with you (notwithstanding my previous smart-ass response), on both accounts.
I believe smallmouth to give a much better fight, pound for pound, but for me, the brookies symbolize a certain wildness and primitive beauty that no other fish can.

This is a tough one. Almost ALL fish are beautiful in their own way, but for the environment, the waters, the light rods and the flies...I would have to say all of the trout and the sunfishes. I know, I cheated and gave 2 answers.

TROUT .... Bull, Redside.Cutthroat, and my favorite the Brown .... But then again as I have said numerous times, do not under sell, or estimate the infamous Bluegill sunfish .. Pound for pound a great sporting fly rod specie .....they will brawl with the best of them and remembering this is ULFF .. We have not taken many 20 inch + Trout on UL tackle, just isn't done ....so the question should have IMHO read UL fish .... Anything over three weight don't count ...

I really like pumpkinseeds, big ones, but they are hard to come by around here, so it's bluegill by default I guess.

Trout. By reason that they are available to me 365 days a year.

One? That's difficult. The explosive fights of the small mouth, the eagerness of the bluegill, the cunning of the trout... but above all, nothing puts a smile on my face like seeing a big ol' crappie on the end of my line!

Hybrid Greens are my choice, and the best cross match is a Green/ Longear. This match creates a crazy little large mouthed fish sporting blazing colors and an appetite for surface bugs. The second best cross is the Green/ Bluegill aka the Mean and nasty. These have smaller mouths than most Greens, but zealously attack a fly and run off like a "scalded monkey". Jeremy has a high opinion of these as well...
