I will be giving tenkara fly fishing a try this coming spring.I would like to know if it would be considered ultralite. The rods don't go by weight like regular rods.
Anybody got some ideas Thanks Dennis ???

Hi Dennis, this forum do not discuss tenkara gear. It sometimes shows up once in a while and goes around mostly untouched because we are a bunch of old farts that are respectful to each other.

I'm not into tenkara, but I guess whatever you get from tenkarausa should be fine

It's a bit of a different animal, although the goal is still to present a fly to a fish. So is fishing flies with UL spin gear and a bubble, but that's not really fly fishing either (I might be persuaded that tenkara is closer to fly fishing than the bubble/fly thing, though). It seems to me that the upper third of a tenkara rod serves a similar purpose to the back end of a flyline taper and beginning of a line belly. Still, the techniques are quite different, each effective in its own best circumstances. Have fun with it, though. I think every UL fisherman ought to give it a try and just maybe add a telescoping, lineless, reel-less outfit to their arsenal, especially if they fish small streams while UL backpacking.

Tenkara i think is more a minimalist type of gear and simplicity tenkarausa.com will have all the info you need in there forum. The style is not rocket science and if your a fly fisher it'll be easy to pick up.

Thanks for all the replies .Simonuca I'm sorry I mentioned Tenkara on this forum.I thought this was an open forum that you could talk about anything. It will never happen again,If & when I respond to a post I will make sure it deals with a rod & reel & I will not start a new topic again that does not deal with 000 wt to 3 wt rods
:) Dennis

Don't worry about it. This comes up every few months and the response is pretty much a variation on a theme. Consensus here is it doesn't qualify for the forum which was designed to provide a sanctuary for UL fly fishing from the intolerant critics on other fly fishing forums. Of course, even this forum has some hard liners about what qualifies as "real" UL fly fishing using "real" flies. Most everyone is friendly and respectful enough to either help you or ignore you if you stray off topic.

Don't take the responses the wrong way. I don't think they were trying to discourage you from discussing tenkara. If you are interested in that style, there are better forums with more tenkara specialists.

Keep posting!

Hi Dennis
As everyone has mentioned we're not really experts in the field of Tenkara. Some folks have and fish them regularly, but it's not often talked here and probably wouldn't get a ton of responses not out of disrespect but more as a result of lack of experience.
And that lack of experience holds in my household as well. My wife recently got a Tenkara rod, and she was so excited until it came time to rig up. I had zero idea what to do with it and had to refer her to another friend who owns one. Recently she had a blast catching brim on the Paluxy- she's stoked. Me I'm still clueless.

Used to do tenkara fishing when I was a kid, tied I some line on to the end
Of one if my dad's rods, went fishing, most of the time had a worm, Cricket,
Hellegremite on a hook, wouldn't call that fly fishing, still don't ...

Paul

Re the packing post ...get yourself a nice multi piece shorty rod for the woods
I pack em all the time a four section UL 2/3 weight don't even know it's there ..much more versatile than the tenkara system IMHO

I'm definitely interested in trying tenkara. It'd be a great backpacking option.

Yeah, Tenkara is pretty cool old-school fishing in my mind. When I was a kid, I had a 12 or 15 foot cane pole with a line on the end of it. If I didn't have a worm or beetle or something to put on it, I wrapped it with some yarn or tinsel. If that dang thing would have been telescopic, it would have been cool Tenkara instead of redneck cane pole. :)

I've been fishing fixed line flyrods (tenkara - seiryu - keiryu) for almost two years now. They span the range from ultralight weight equipment all the way up to rods that can handle larger carp. The best place I've seen for information is http://www.tenkarabum.com - feedback from many independent people on several brands. Google 'tenkara forum" and you'll get several hits to other forums that address tenkara and a few tenkara specific sites.

It was only recently that I've gotten into flygear in the ultralight weight class - and I only did so because I found I was range limited (length of rod and non adjustable flyrod). I now have flyrods/reels in the 3wt range (to add to my 5 and 8 wt stuff), but I still readily take my fixed line tackle whenever I go fishing.

I'm of the belief that fishing is fishing and what you fish with should be fun - tenkara, ultralight spinning gear, 3wt flyrods all are great when you make the great escape into fishing.

I forgot to mention - my favorite fixed line fly fishing rod (easier than saying seiryu which this rod is actually designed to do, not tenkara which is actually a separate style, and keiryu which is yet another different style) is a Nissin Fine Mode Nagare Two-Way Zoom 390 to 440 cm rod. By my experience, a rod that makes an average sized bluegill feel like a perturbed wahoo yanking on the other end of your line is an ultralight rod. The action is super soft when casting it at 390 cm.

Just another tool to go fishing with!

As anyone who's fished tenkara tackle will attest, tying a line to the end of a conventional fly rod or cane pole or crappie pole is as different from real tenkara as spinning is from fly fishing. It's all fun, but different.

I'm excited to get a Tenkara setup this summer. I've been wanting to give them a try for a while now. I grew up in the south so my first fishing experiences were with an old cane pole. Hope this brings back some of the great childhood memories.

“Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."

Yeah I know it's kind of a stretch.

had an old guy tell me this when I was just a kid. It's just as pertinent now as it was then:
"Kid", he says,
"nothing is bought; everything's sold"

I have fished Tenkara extensively in the last year. It is the ultimate Ultralight, it is fly fishing and it is fly casting and it is a lot of fun. You do cast a line and can vary the line weights with different Flouro or braided lines. I have caught 4 inch dinkers all the way up to 18 inch fish with mine. I plan on some large carp fishing this year. Line control is awesome on these rods and it brings new meaning to dead drift. You have to stalk fish quite a bit more but in smaller water it is in my opinion much more efficient.

Tenkara Bum, Chris Stewart's site has a plethora of information on the method and is a wonderful dealer in all things with fixed line fishing. If you give it a thorough chance it might become your preferred method, as it did for me as I left the Western gear at home quite a bit and took the Tenkara/Seiryu/Keiryu out on the water.
