Most of us of course have several UL rods but which weight class do you use the most over the year?

Are you changing over the year or is it mostly the same?

I'm using mostly my 3 wt.

Heck, I'll say "2'. My 3 is realistically more like a powerful 2 and my 2 is definitely somewhere in the 1-ish category. I should build a 0 or 1 next just to have it all covered in market description and actual performance.

I use 2 weights the most because I spend the summer and early fall fishing the trico hatches here on a couple of our limestone streams.

I have two that I use. First a G Loomis GLX Streamdance Presentation 8' 2 weight and second a St. Croix Avid 7'6" 2 weight. Both are a lot of fun to fish with.

I use one of my 2 weight rods the most. My second choice is another 2 weight rod. My third rod that gets used the most is a 3 weight rod. My next most used rods are too heavy-duty to mention. :P

It seems that I use two line weights on pretty much an even basis. So you can put me on the record as using a 0-weight 50% of the time and a 3-weight 50% of it.

I use a 0wt the most with the 3wt being my second most used UL weight. I used to have 000 and 1wt rods. After a while I got rid of the ones I did not like as much. It wasn’t based on line weight though, it was based on the rods that I liked. For example I loved the 0wt SPL/SLT more than the 000wt TXL or the 1wt Superfine so I kept the SPL and SLT. They just happen to be the 0wt version.

I would like to know more about this. It is very confusing. Have yet to find a simple article on how to select a shooting head for a single hand rod. I fish mostly at sea doing blindcasts so, I would like to cover more area.

Someone else will chime in with more information. There have been several posts these last few years concerning this subject; Linecaster has several. I've noticed Max Catch has shooting heads fairly cheaply which could facilitate buying several to experiment with.

I'll give you my approach. I buy heavy line discounted and after some experimentation decide what length of this line I want to use as a shooting head. Then I attach a mono filament shooting line to the butt of the shooting head and use this for active roll casting. For the shooting head I've been using 10wt and have some 12 or 14 wt I will soon experiment with.

I also do much the same thing with line/rod at wt. In other words for a 3 wt rod I would start with a 3 wt line and again using discounted line I cut a section of the head off, I like 21 feet, and attach a mono filament running line. With this set up I use a pick up - back cast and shoot and no false casting. In the winter when temperatures are freezing the mono filament doesn't work well so I have a reel with braided shooting line.

For the shooting line I have been using Amnesia 15lb mono filament; I have also started experimenting with 25 lb Amnesia.
I've also used RIO shooting line. Amnesia is much less expensive than RIO but RIO doesn't coil as much. For the braided line I use 50lb.

The tricky part for me is attaching the shooting line to the butt of the shooting head so that the connection will slip through the guides without catching. I strip about an inch of the coating off of the butt of the shooting head and thread my shooting line into the core of shooting head. Then I tie a granny knot in the shooting line and slip the granny knot back into the core. Then I apply UV knot. Sounds flaky I know, the granny knot, but I have never had one to fail.

I

Look up Skagit/Spey casting on this forum. I am using a total weight shooting head with tip and leader of 175 gr on my 2 weight. With a 20lb Slikshooter shooting running line. Use a pick up and shoot or a Skagit/Spey cast if you have no back cast room. PM me if the info you find is confusing or you want further info. Look up OPST single hand micro casting on YouTube. I have finally figured out how to cast and am enjoying it.

Thanks for the feedback, definitely a good experimenting starting point.

How far can you go with a shooting head on an Ultralight fly rod?

My limit on casting distance using shooting lines is line management.
