There are so many to chose from. Old school , new school, vintage, true UL 2.2 ounce and smaller. Let's start with my go to's, the Ross Colorado zero and one. Shown below taken down. On the zero I have orvis DT 1F On the one I have Rio DT3F One of my favorite lines. What are yours?

My smallest reel is an Orvis Battenkill click pawl, made by BFR in England. It weighs in at 3.5oz. I need to find something a bit lighter for my 2wt rods, something in the 2.5-2.75oz range.

Perhaps this will work: from Bass Pro See: 38-421-071-20 ULTRALIGHT REEL 2.2 OZ LINE WEIGHT 2-4 BACKING 10M DT4/100 YDS WRCULB $89.99 I have an Ablette 370 which I won on ebay years ago for $20.00. Now they're routinely selling for $40.00. I just weighed mine with 2 DTF + backing and it came in at 4.7 ounces. not a bad set up either.

Yeah I've seen the Bass Pro reels. They would work well on my short rods. I think I would like the Sage 3100 click pawl, but every time I look at them I get sticker shock and pass out.

If pricing is an issue J, JAF offers the Magnesium reel which weighs right at 2.3 and holds a WF4F and 150 yds backing. They go for $80 on that auction site. You could look at the Orvis BBS I weighing 3.2oz and selling for $89.
I am a fan of my Lamson Velocity Hard Alox 1. If you can find one, look at the Lamson LP-1.

Jeremy we have talked about these. I use a crystal river cahill cr-0001a It weighs about 2.4 oz and is about 2 5/8 in diameter made of graphite . Not a high end reel at all but it gets the job done and balances the light rods really well. I am currently on the hunt for an old ryobi 255mg very light magnesium reel but they are getting hard to find..

Janus, another light reel is the Martin MG-3. They don't weigh much of anything.

I may have to check EvilBay for one of the Crystal River reels, that would be the economical way for me to go right now since the budget is so tight. I wouldn't mind a Hardy ultralight, but those give me sticker shock too.

The Flyweight would be your choice, let me tell you! They are $295 new, and that same price used. Hardy makes nice reels, but for the same price, you can get American made reels with a better drag. Look into the JAF Magnesium.

At 2.2oz, they are great for a SHORT 1-3wt.

so when does it get too heavy for a shorter say like 2wt..is it about 3.5oz or less or lower? I can balance my longer upper wt rods with a old medalist 1495 without thinking. But 4wt and under requires some more thought in my experience.

My Orvis Battenkill clicker weighs 3.5oz and it's too heavy for the 6'6" 2wts.

Well, in my mind, for a reel to balance a rod, you want a reel that is about 40% heavier than the rod, when spooled with line/backing. I have a rod that is about 2.8oz, and have a 4oz reel on it, and it is perfect IMO.

I like it to balance at the front of the grip. My 2wts balance about mid grip with the Orvis reel. Too heavy.

Yep...you would do well with a 3oz reel or a little lighter.

1.6 is ridiculous! LOL...Isn't that the 2" Avon Don? By the way, it is nice to see you over here!
Another good reel for UL rods is the 2.8oz JAF Aerial mid arbor click/pawl drag. That would make a great reel for a 6'6-7' sliding band 1-2wt.

I just picked up a new Sage Click II reel, 3in large arbor at 2.4 oz, but I may take it back and order a Click I at 2.25 oz, because the II holds plenty of light backing and 70ft of 5wt line! The reel I have in hand is really sweet, with no protruding knobs (except the handle) and has the same adjustable click drag as the old 3000 series reels. The new reels are an attractive bronze color, similar to the current CFO's. -CC
