I've been looking at the Hardy Marksman reel is size 2/3wt. I am wondering if anyone here has one and what they think of this reel. Is it really 1 9/16 oz? Also, is it as brightly polished as it seems? I not real fond of items that reflect light like a mirror. Silver is nice I just wonder why we don't see more matte finished reels.

I've seen other weights listed for that reel. It felt a bit heavier to me when I picked one up in a shop a while back. I suspect that's the weight for the extra spool alone. Seems like I saw a site with it listed that way at least once. It's still a light reel, though.

I never held one just seen posts and pics- nice looking reel. Another one with flash is the Ari 't Hart reel.

I can believe the weight claim on that reel. I have played with one and it is smooth, and the clicker does just enough to prevent backlash. That reel is tiny, and a half DT line or a Cortland 10m makes all the difference.

I knew it couldn't be true (sub-2oz weigh claims on the Marksman reels)--that much bar stock aluminum can't be that light, and I've held lighter reels, like the Flyweight, the Waterworks Purist's, and the Sage Click/3000's. I have in hand the UK 2009 Hardy catalog (really nice, btw). The Marksman weights, in ounces and grams: 2/3wt--3.25oz, 92.3g 3/4wt--3.49oz, 99.1g 4/5wt--3.75oz, 106.5g 5/6wt--4.83oz, 137g I strongly suspect the dealer catalogs and sites are quoting weights for extra spools, or someone at Hardy or Cortland doesn't know how to convert metric grams to ounces (28.35=1).

Hmm...3.2oz for a Hardy or 3.2oz for an Orvis and save LOTS...hmm...tough choice.

The price difference between Hardy and Orvis could be the determining factor.

Hello, I was seriously considering a marksman 2 weeks ago. Did all the research (weighing it, reading up on it and speaking to people who have one). My view (for what its worth) is that the 2/3 really is as light as they claim. Not sure where the 3.2oz reading came from, but the reel is way lighter. Probably the lightest small stream reel on the market presently. The design is awesome and the reel looks very pretty. The only problem for me is the colour. It is not a matte silver its a polished silver and it does reflect light. I even went so far as to contact Hardy to find out if they could anodized one in black for me - no go unfortunately! If it was not for the colour I would definitely have bought this reel. I think, however, that teh sage click is the next best thing because of its colour and non flash finish.

The 3.25oz claim for the 2/3 comes straight from the bound, four-color, high-grade paper (in other words, expensive--also well-edited) 2009 Hardy catalog. I have also handled these reels as well as the Sage Clicks, and other very light reels, and I believe the Hardy catalog to be accurate, certainly more so than dealer web sites and product review articles, where the source of the info and the editing have proven suspect in the past. In the end, though, everyone should choose the reel that they like the best. One ounce more reel weight isn't going to seriously affect anyone's fishing. -CC
