All,
This subject could almost be categorized in the Frugal Fly Fisherman, but it's mostly about using retro reels to match with UL rods. I have seen threads featuring Hardy Marksman and other more high end reels. These are more moderately priced and perform their tasks perfectly in most fishing situations.
Here are five I have chosen:
Top left to right: HI Sportcraft No 60 and the OC Viscoy
Bottom left to right: Pflueger Progress 1776 ( with counter balence), the Union Jack (very light), and the OC 305(sans clicker)

If you have thoughts or pix to share please step up.

I'm considering a sportcraft 60 right now or an Edwards No. 30.
Nice reels. Thanks for posting the pic.

You would like the Sporcraft, and I have an Edwards 40, so perhaps the 30 is smaller and lighter too. Good choices.

Les....

I know that these vintage reels have an avid following "at that other site,"....heck I even have an old Bronson 370 and Martin 67SS on a couple of heavier rods......but realistically........

#1. What do these weigh? Are they really a good match for UL rods?

#2. Manufacturing processes have drastically improved since most of these vintage reels were produced, how good are they really?

Nice collection!!

David

All good questions. Let's start with the weight and dimensions
Sportcraft 60 /3.3 ounces/ 3"
Viscoy /4.9 ounces/3"
OC 305 /4.1 ounces/3 1/8"
Union Jack /3.2 ounces /2 7/8"
Plueger Progress 1776/ 4.6 ounces/3"
These are all good for UL especially in the 2-3 wt ranges. Under this 1 and under you might consider a lighter pairing-a more modern Dennison or Bass Pro shops 2.2 ounce UL reel. But the examples I have given are older reels when UL was a twinkle in Byrd's eye.

Janus,
With the excetion of the OC 305 and the OC viscoy all the reels are bi-directional; that is, they can be used LHW. There are no pawls to be rotated or changed. Infact, if you can live with the line keeper facing rearward, the two OC's will perform well too.

Thanks for the weights Les. You can buy one of each of those reels for less than a new UL reel, so that is where their value lies.

This is the only vintage reel I have that I would consider UL.
A Martin 63. A 3" dia. metal tuna can reel that weighs just over 3.2 oz with backing on my wife's food scale.
cost about $10

Those Tuna Cans are pretty nice for the buck! I would like to have an MG-3 or two. In fact, if I could find an MG-3, I might let my Lamson go, just kidding...

Martin MG-3's are under 3oz empty. The would make for a fine UL reel.

pearow thank you for posting that pic. I have the crystal river cahill in that size so it gives me a good comparison to the other reels in the picture. What is a gayls simplicity? I have never heard of it. I really like the way it looks.

Brian,
Gayle Simplicity aluminum alloy fly reels were manufactured in Frankfort KY in the early 1900's. I have No 6 with two crank knobs it is compact- 2.5" and light- 3.1 ounces even by today's standards. There is a lot of information on Kentucky reels - prized for their quality and the fact that many have survived the passage of time.

See my No 6 bottom right.

Les, what skeleton reel is that? I love that with the silver spool on the black frame.

It's a OC 61 knock-off stamped Japan. The real OC 61 and this one stamped Japan are essentially the same reel . I took these pix as a collage for a group of reels which qualify for UL - never posted them though.
