I've turned quite a bit and frequently run into bark and voids. The bark can be pretty cool, but the larger voids can be a problem. It's beautiful stuff though and the smaller voids can be easily filled with resin and then turned. I've turned Mesquite burl that was murderous on chisels--it was packed full of silica--but it's gorgeous wood! You had asked about the reel-seat on that new Lamiglas 3wt I posted pics of earlier; it's a walnut burl from Bellinger. Good luck and I can't wait to see the results! Jerry

Les, I am looking at a new UL rod, and a 6'6" Lamiglas fly rod might make the perfect creeker.

Trouter2, What do you think of the Cabelas Clear Creek 5 fot 2wt? I had considered one once, but did pull the trigger. Now they're gone.

The Cabelas clear creek 5 '0 is a fun little rod, I have fished it maybe 5 or 6 times and have only used the 2 weight DT once due to wind conditions. It casts the heck out of that 3 weight Airflo ribbed I was telling you about. 20-30 feet with no problem and it roll casts nicely also, I was very surprised. It is a border line slow to medium flex. For that size it is fun. I have not caught anything sizeable on it, a couple of Bluegills and Shellcrackers about the size of the palm of your hand. Understand from someones post that Cableas is no longer carrying that model, they are upgrading the rod to something else. I think they had problems with people using & breaking the small spigott ferrules. Paul

Cabela's discontinued that line, and it upset me too!

Andy ..regarding the price on UL cane rods. I gotta say in this market a pre-owned in good condition will run ya $400-600. UL cane rods are getting very popular of late. Demand for them is increasing. I am at this time in fact looking for a 4'9 midge rod. There are a few sites with reputable dealers. I favor Jimmy Breskos Coldwater Collectibles. I have purchased 5-7 Cane rods from him in the last 2-4 years. He rates the condition of the rod and is very fair in the pricing. I have never returned a rod to him because of the condition of the rod. They are what he rates them. Bottom line is ya gotta keep your ear to the ground. Keep checking these various sites and sooner or later you will come up with the rod at the price you are looking to spend ....Paul PS there is nothing like the feel of a slow to medium action UL cane rod with a fish on ...Ya gotta experience it to appreciate it

I still have a couple of Tony Spezio bamboo seconds for the do-it-yourselfer. I agree with those who find that a 3 weight is a good all around rod. I fished a Thomas in Colorado almost exclusively for 5 years. That is why I don't consider a 3 weight to be ultralight. A 3 weight is standard! Don

A three weight in some situations is ultralight! I will carp on a 3wt!
