I've decided to order the 7'6"/ 2 weight ultraweave blank from dorber and build a lite little rod during the winter months. I sold my 7'6"-3 weight during a moment of financial panic; it was a honey, but I am gonna go with an even lighter version. Probably going to buy the all cork grip/reelseat from them if they'l sell it to me. The blank is about $100 with shipping and the grip/reelseat/rings was about $12 last time I checked. If anyone wants one built, let me know as I can save a little shipping two at once. I would charge abut $75 over cost to build one. The little 3 I had was much lighter and softer than any 1 weight i have ever used.-p-

Gene,
Have you ever tried their fly line or the reels?

i've used the line quiet a bit; never bought a reel; line is good; its like any of the cheaper lines; you gotta keep it clean; but they probably make a bunch of line we use we just dont know it-p-

Gene.....

Asking you to guess.......how do you think the 7'6 2wt Dorber Ultraweave compares to the Dan Craft 6'10 1wt in terms of action and blank weight?

My friend has the 7'6" 2wt Dorber ultraweave and I can tell you it is a very very soft and slow fly rod and it will protect even the lightest of tippets assuming of course if one has the correct fly reel. This rod will cast both a 1wt or 0wt fly line and still be a soft rod....

your friend has the 2 weight ; do either of you have any comparisons to the 3 weight? I've had a 3 and it is indeed very soft; but i am thinking i want to try the 2; the blanks are pretty expensive and if there is not a lot of difference i might build another 3-p-

So now I'm in a state of confusion........

Should I get the Dan Craft 6'10 1wt....or the ultraweave 7'6 2wt?

I like slow rods - fish fiberglass in the heavier weights exclusively.....not a distance caster.....fish from a kayak all the time so I like length....isn't the Ultraweave American made....is the Dan Craft????

Thanks for any help....

David

David, the Ultraweave are made here in the USA as far as I know. Not sure if the Dan Craft blanks are or not, but they carry an American made price tag.
Gene says the UV's are slow, and I've heard others say that they are really slow.
When in doubt ask Gene.

J.

the ultraweave blanks are seriously slow; you cannot cast them when you first pick one up; it takes a few minutes to get your rythm down; and its no Chubby Checker rythm; rather like Eddie Arnold; they flex all the way to the butt, but theyre nice once you get the feel and have the right line; theyre very line sensitive-p-

ha!...... they have a toll free number; call and see if you can talk to Ray bauer; he's the builder; he knows rods; he'll tell you straight; he makes them in Flippin, Arkansas (as i understand it)

I would imagine theyre shut down til the5th; course i dont know. I'll probably wait til the 5th or 6th of january to order.
Les, let us know what they say about the weights; I asked once but it was a while back
the built rods show a weight of 1.7oz for the 3 weight and 1.8 oz for the 2 weight; the 2 weight is 6 inches longer; but if its less than 2 ounces bilt, the blank is pretty light-p-

I'm also curious about their ultra-light spin blanks. They have a 2 piece 6' spin blank that sports a 4.5 tip and a .280 butt; saying its rated for 1# to 4# line weights. A fly rod made out of that could be pretty light; the blank is $33, which might prove to be a nice little rod. Worth the gamble? I dunno-p-

Thanks Gene.....guess I just need to decide now which one I want to get.....the Dorber or the Dan Craft.....i think they'd both be nice...and work fine.....

Do you know the numbers on the Dorber???

The 6'10 1wt from Dan Craft has a 4.0 tip and .275 butt....

David
