Not sure if this thread has been discussed before but since this is an ultra light forum I thought I would ask the question again. Is there a noticeable difference between the sage 0wt, 00wt and 000wt? Which do you all recommend and how do these blanks hold up in a light breeze? Are they only for dry flies or can you comfortably cast size 16 and 18 bead head nymphs with them? Also any ideas on the ERN ratings of these rods?

I have a 0 wt. and a 1 wt. The 1 wt. handles size 12 beadhead nymphs with no trouble. I've only had the 0 wt. a few days and the biggest I've tried so far is an unweighted 14 woolly bugger which it handled just fine. Today, while fishing the 0 wt. I had a 5 to 7 mph crosswind and it did fine with that too, as long as I used a sidearm cast and kept it low.

I think these 0 weights are capable of a lot more than most fly fisherman think. I'll be interested to hear what the guy's with 00 and 000 weights say about those line weights.

Neither of these rods are Sage rods, but I think the capabilites will be very similar.

Jerry

I have both an 0-wt and a 000-wt. While they both cast their designated line weights just fine, I prefer to cast a 2-wt line with the 0-wt and a 1-wt line with the 000. Even with the heavier lines, I've had no problems casting larger flies (up to #12), including bead head wets.

I prefer the heavier lines because they cast more accurately in the wind, and you can feel the rod load better.

Dan Craft is one of the few that markets a "true" 000 and 00 rod. Much of my experience has been with some Sig IVs, which I believe were a special run. The Sage rods are pretty stout and it would not surprise me if they needed to be overlined. Don

The differences between these rods isn't a lot, and you've not a lot of choice below 2wt, so I'd pick the one that feels best. The nominal AFTM weight of a #1 line is 60 grains (54-66). I don't think AFTM ratings go below #1, so you really have to rely on Sage below that. Their 0wt line is 54gr, which is actually a light 1wt. The 00wt is about 48gr (I can't remember the exact number, and it's not widely advertised). As you can see, there's very little difference between the 1wt and the 00wt, and not much for the 000wt either (I don't think I've ever seen that one published). The entire range of 000-1wt is less than the difference between a 1 and a 2, 3, 4, 5 (20 grains), and most rods will handle one up or down without difficulty. For my Orvis 1wt (new version), I have lines from 0-3wt, and it handles them all with ease.

I suspect the differences with slower rods is more pronounced even if we are talking a few grains of difference. I can easily tell the difference in leader construction/air resistance with the very light rods, which is about the equivalent of those few grains in line weight. Don

Six grains (difference between a 00 and 0wt line) is about 1/80th ounce. You may feel the difference, but that's only a couple of feet of fly line, and any of these rods can handle it easily, up or down. You may prefer the softer feel of the 000 rod over the 00 or 0 rod, but can still overline without overstressing the rod if you want, because you're only increasing by 6-18 grains, at the most.

Depends on the tip CC. Particularly with ultralights you can often swamp the tip well before the rest of the rod is affected. The Sage series probably would perform exactly as you describe. I find some other rods to be much more finicky. I have an 8' Dan Craft 00 that I would love to have you cast. Finding the right line for some ultralights is much more challenging than one would expect. As a result of shortening bamboo butts and tips to change the action, I have a greater appreciation of the temperment of light rods. Don

Don, can you link us to the blank for the longer Dan Craft 1 and 0wt rods? If so, I appreciate it!

....and the 00wt from Dan Craft. is that a discontinued blank? I looked at their website and didn't see it listed.

Thanks!

David

A Signature IV blank. Probably not available, but you could always call. Don

The Sage 00 I had and gave my son was the first true to line weight rod Ive ever had in an ultra ultra light. A cavet here, it was with Sage's speciality line the quite taper 00 and I never bothered to actually weigh the first 30ft of the body. However in playing around with the rod I found it would load well with just about anybodies DT1wt and most WF1wt lines. Something I can not say even for some of the premium 1wt rods available today. The Sage rod is high end I know, but if your looking for a rod under 1wt its the only one I know that consistantly performs. In light winds its still usable, it loads well, sight casting to 45ft is no problem and no work. You just have to get over the sticker shock. In a weak moment I gave mine to my son a couple years ago in the dead of winter (must have been part of cabin feaver), so now Im looking for another one. I luckily just purchased the reel I gave him, a now discontinued Sage 3100 and a spool of line from an internet discounter today, just gotta hookup with a replacement rod now.

It's strange how interest in the sub 0-weight rods and lines has faded out over the last few years. It would be very interesting to know the reasons for that. Do any of you have ideas or explanations?

I don’t think interest has faded out as much as investigation and defining discourse has. Folks still love fishing light tackle and enjoying expanded opportunities for smaller species, but the 0-00-000…(OOOOHHH BS! :P ) part of the Sage marketing campaign has kinda run it’s course.

Not really a mean dig at ‘em, either, it’s a pretty amusing and ingenious bit of marketing. We have to credit Sage with pushing the light tackle concept on all fronts even if it does get a dubiously stretched beyond the “0 weight” in terms of grains. To be fair, their designations dealt with the entire system set-up (line, rod, reel) when adding more 0s to the name.

If you re-read this thread and others, the differences at 0 and under are pretty small, thus marrying a rod to such minimal differences in grain weight is very subjective. As I’ve elaborated on elsewhere here, lines far below any of these designations can perform quite well. Same for lines above, it’s the beauty of rods which deflect under their own movement regardless of line. Light tackle has a unique versatility in this way, once people realize it, they simply explore on the water more than the web. Mystery of what is gone, journey and enjoyment of how is underway now.
