Hi guys I posted a thread a while back about the 0, 00 and 00wt rods. Thanks for those of you who provided input. What I am now looking for is honest reviews about the 000wt, which I intend getting. I have a "true" 3wt which I use most often if there is some wind or if I am throwing weighted nymphs etc so the 000wt will be a speciality rod for me - ie to use on windless days and for throwing tiny dries and nymphs. Just looking for that final confirmation from guys who have this rod that it is a winner.

Thanks.

I have a 000 and it's my favorite rod. Whether it's a "true" 000 or not I'll leave to you to decide. I cast it regularly with a 000 line and with a 1-wt line. I don't have many waters where presentation is an issue, so I prefer to cast with the 1-wt line. To me it just feels better. Makes the rod flex right into the grip and slows it right down. I also get more distance out of the cast. When casting with the 000 line, the line lands like a whisper, so if you fish waters where stealth is key, then this is the line for you.

The 000 is not a toy. It's a serious rod. You can horse in fish if you need to. My biggest to date is an 18 inch westslope cutthroat, but there will be bigger ones in my future....I hope.

Feather. Not to rain on anyone's parade but I don't regard the Sage as fitting the ideal of a 000. To use a shotgun analogy, it reminds me of a 12 guage with 410 sleeves installed. In other words, too much rod bulk (grip size, reel seat) for the designated rod weight. I am extremely biased in this regard because I downsize hardware and reels to suit the line weight. I can see it as a 1 weight, however. Don

The simple solution would be to buy a blank and build your own.

True enough Highlander, which is the route I would recommend if Dan Craft blanks weren't so much less expensive! However, personal taste is important here. The Sage is beefier than I like, but others might find it to be more versatile than a dedicated U-UL rig. I have spent my last 3 outings fishing a Dennison reel (the 1 1/2" inch model, not the 2 1/4" model discussed on this forum) and my Forbes Trico (1 1/4") so the Sage looks like a goliath in comparison. I didn't know the Dennison came any smaller the earlier one discussed. What's the weight on 11/2" model? and what is the ideal capacity assuming there's some backing?

What is the lightest (line weight) currently available Dan Craft blank?

Is the 1wt the lightest currently availble or is there such a thing as a 0, 00 or 000 Dan Craft??

How does the 1wt Dan Craft compare to the Sage 000wt....in terms of casting and catching action?

HHmmmm.....after my Dorber 2wt ultraweave build.......I'll "need" another UL rod.....

David

I have to side with everyone here. All of Sage's 0 and lighter will toss a WF1F line perfectly. The lighter lines are not only expensive, but are unnecessary.

I have a 8', 6 piece 00 Dan Craft, but it is a SIG IV series and may not be available. Japanese market? It is the lightest graphite blank I have ever cast. The miniature Dennison will not hold a full fly line, but will hold enough to get you by. Bob says 1 ounce, but mine came in at .9 at the Post Office. I will have Robin take a pix of a rod built with this seat and post it one of these days. For what it is worth, you are really into the UL zone when you build a 6' rod with a Dennison miniature. I will measure the ID of the seat for those who are interested. It is very inexpensive and the reel is sold with the dedicated reel seat. Oddly, you completely forget that you are using miniature tackle within a few minutes. Don

Don, I am mildly intriged by the Dennison mini reel and seat. I have no idea on what kind of rod to build around it though. It would have to be short and a 1wt or less.

J, a 5' 1wt or so would be nice for that!

Don,
I like the sound of that- I've admired some of your previous work- photos of fairy wands. I have always wondered how they felt in the hand.

Thanks everyone. Does anyone know how the sage owt and under compare to the CTS 0wt blanks? I have a Dan Craft 8'6" 3wt Sig V blank which is great, but I want a 0wt or under that is at least 7'10" so the Dan Craft 1wt is too short for my needs.

The ID of the miniature Dennison reel seat is .25. That means only a few graphite UL blanks will work and probably few if any fiberglass. Feather - why do you need a longer blanK? I am curious. My favorite length is 6' 9". Don

I like shorter rods as well. As long as I will go now is 7.5'. It is more convenient from a float tube.

Hey Zenkoanhead - the streams I fish are generally gin clear and small mountain freestone streams. There is usually not much in the way of overhanging brush etc (ie no real need for a short blank). So while gentle and quite presentations are essential (ie the need for a UL blank) there is generally a need to spend most of the day high-sticking pockets (hence the need for a longer blank). Because there is not much cover and the fish are super spooky I dont really cast to them its more a case of using the length of the rod as a lever (ie 2-3 ft of line out the tip with the 12 ft leader). I have fished 7'6" before and I found it restricted my fish catching ability - probably just personal preference.

Actually, I guessed that you might need the length for high sticking. We call it dapping around here. Don
