First choice:
Dorber 2wt Ultraweave blank
7'6"
2 DT

Second choice:
Echo Classic 3wt
7'6" 4 pc
4 DT ( I like slowing it down by overlining it)

Sage SPL Center Axis 0wt for size 12 flies or smaller.  Sometimes if it too windy I'll use the 1wt center axis combo.

If I'm throwing popping bugs or wooly buggers, I use a Sage SPL 8'9" 3wt with the 3100 reel and triangle taper line.

Seems like I have chased quite a few panfish this year and the rod I always grab is my Scott F 601. It really lets the fish show their strength, but can still throw a small popper or bead head.

This was the test rod from the Ohio FF 2wt shootout. I just love it.

Hey Les

Have been so busy with music stuff. The studio has been booked non-stop for over a year and I've been on planes too much. Things are calming down though. The water is down here in Ohio and I was looking longingly at the river the other day and suddenly remembered - Holy Moly! - I love flyfishing!

So here I is.

:-)

If there was some accessible Bluegill fishing around here I'd prolly go with my 8ft9in 3wt Shikari or a 6ft6in Di-glass3wt. Maybe my early model Orvis 7'9 2wt.

1. Norie Early Spring (Vlad of Fly Fisherman's Cafe Custom build)
2. 7'
3. 2/3wt

Butter smooth & deeeeeeep flexing casting stroke, amazing roll casting rod, makes a 10" gill feel like a 2lb smallmouth, also a fine looking rod and of course that counts!!

Paul,
Great choice. Not everyone likes the short rods, but I do. IMO a 5 footer makes a great "under cover" expplorering rod.

Les, short rods are fun rods in my opinion, the spin/fly rod Gene built is medium flex and catching even small panfish is a brawl. I was lucky enough last year to purchase a fly rod and reel combination made B. Dennison, the rod is 4'3 and the reel is his famous tiny ultra lyte, the reel seat and cork handle are very small, fitting the theme of the rod. It's a one piece graphite rod with a fast flex to it, I would have preferred it softer but it's a novelty rod, much fun fishing with it though ..if ya like small that's the rod ... Paul

7', 3wt , Native Custom. Light enough for Blue Gills, long enough for a decent cast (even in the wind) and short enough to avoid most obstructions I fish around.

I still enjoy my Axisco Airrite Stream that I mentioned seven years ago, but it has been supplanted in my affections by my Mountain Brook glass 2 weight or my Old Beech Quiet Loop 3 weight glass. So I'm fickle, so sue me. ;)

After some experimenting over the past few years I like my 7.5' medium fast carbon 2wt for bluegill/small bass. Any heavier and the dinkers aren't any fun, any lighter and I'm sacrificing fly size and casting distance.
