The "BPS White River Classic UL" is an excellent reel that doesn't get much press. I use it on a 6' 1 wt which makes for a very light rig.

That's because some people have an automatic despise for store brand gear; especially BPS aka White River Fly Shop.

I am new to the site, glad I found it. Moved to Eugene OR from Maui about 6 yrs. ago and finally getting around to go fly fishing. Bought an AJ Thramer bamboo 7 1/2' 5wt. a while back and I have been practicing with an old Medalist 1494 reel. I also have a brand new Ross Colorado #1 that I bought quite a few years ago as well. I am not sure if the Ross will work well with my rod, and I don't really want to try it and have it not work out, as I am sure someone would like to have a "new" Colorado vs. one that has been used. Wondering if anyone would know if the Ross would work well on the rod I have being it is a #1. Will appreciate anyone's opinion about it.

First and foremeost, welcome to the forum.
I have a Ross Colorado 1. Although considered on the heavy side for a UL reel (4.0 ounces), this reel matches up well on 2-4 wt graphite rods; that said, it really might feel nice on your boo. Most times you'll never really need a sealed drag, and if so the palming rim is enogh to slow a larger fish.

I have quite a few but really like my Orvis Batinkill LA and BBS1. Funny, I never used to be an Orvis fan but am acquiring more. My first small reel and still a favorite is a Redington AS3/4. Heavy but dead reliable. I also like older reels like the 1492 and CFO's.

I have an Orvis Battenkill LA 1, but my favorite is a Lamson LP1 and LP1.5 L, they're rock solid and dependable, mine are over 20 yrs old and look / work like new.. I had an Orvis BBS 1 but sold it.

Interesting discussion. haven't posted or been around much but the ARI T HART is awesome

For Graphite or Glass the Sage Clicker clone is my favorite primarily because I have a few. For Bamboo the featherlight 200. My son likes number 3

My favorite UL reel is the Waterworks Purist for several reasons.
1) These reels are very light weight and balance very well with UL rods.
2) Low maintenance and simplicity
3) Overall durability and finish
4) Large arbor (line storage and quicker retrieve ratio)
5) The traditional feel of palming the reel to control the run of the occasional big fish
Another favorite is the Sage 3000 series for many to the same reasons as the Purist.
The Lamson Litespeed ranks right up there with the previous two. The weight being only a small consideration, and the drag system, although a very good drag system, sometimes diminishes the feel of the old tradition one has when palming the outer rim of the reel to control a wild fish.
Another UL reel worthy of consideration is the Danielsson Midge. Its light weight, large arbor, and minimal drag system would appeal to any UL enthussiast. However, its unusual design might require a bit more maintenance than the traditional fly reel and replacement parts might be expensive and difficult to obtain.

My Redington Drifts are nice, but I really like my Wychwood River & Stream. Another very nice contender is the Vosseler.
