I'm headed back to Michigan for a few days and my cousin has been killing the Atlantic Salmon on flies and spinning gear. He's been using Caddis nymphs and lately all the fish have been gorging themselves on hex nymphs. I know a few good patterns but any new ones would be appreciated. Here are some fish he's caught. I plan on using a7 or 8 weight rod with full sink line.ImageImage
I can't wait to hook some of these on a fly rod.

No patterns, but you need my TFO Axiom 5wt with my Rio outbound T-8 custom cut shooting head. Sinks like a rock. It's cut at 26' and then it has an intermediate sinking running line. LOL may not be considered UL by forum rules, but I would consider it UL for what you are going to be chasing.

Go big or go home is what we normally say, but at least I'm half right-you'll already be home ;)

Pink or purple patterns?

The flies he's been using are all green Caddis larvae and hex nymph in tan colors are what they are all full of.

Mbarker I'm sure a 5wt for one of these fish in that much current would be more than ultralight. This is in the st Mary's river between Lake Superior and Lake Huron.

Does any one have some fly recipes for a hex nymph?

Check Youtube. There are half dozen there -- several by Michigan guides.

The simplest to tie is the Michigan Wiggler, a suggestive pattern that has taken many steelhead.
