I've been tying all day to restock my fly box. The winter trout stocking has me scrambling to replace flies lost in Michigan this past summer. Here is my go to dry fly. Size 18 mosquito. It seems like all trout love this pattern.

Looks great to me. Have you ever experimented with leaving the wings off #18 and smaller?

I haven't. I usually tie them in first and stand them up when I bring the thread up to secure the hackle. I usually tie them in size 18 but haven't tried smaller. Michigan mosquitos are on the large size lol. A trick I've used is using the stem of the hackle for the body. I stop the fibers off from it and wrap it up the body and go right into the hackle once I run out of stem. I takes some trial and error to learn how much to strip off.

Nice, buggy, fly. I like your stripped hackle trick.
I also wonder about the wings. I know they're traditional but it always seemed to me that trout probably can't see them as they're on top of the fly and the tie would be simpler w/o them. Apologies in advance to traditionalist as I may be speaking heresy. ;-)

I wonder the same about the wings. It does help spot your fly on the drift though.

I've tied smaller flies with and without, and see no difference in response. Now, I tie wings on flies I'm tying for others, but leave them out on my own. Very small sample size, though. I DO use bright colours (white or yellow) for posts for parachutes, though.
