We're having a mini winter heat wave, so my wife and I took the kayaks to a lake about half an hour from our house only to discover it was still mostly covered in ice. There was no point in launching so I did a little bank fishing but that's not the point of the story. Despite all the ice, a huge hatch of little black stoneflies was going on. They were all over the surface of the lake, on my clothes, in my hair, etc. Interestingly, I only saw one surface take. Food everywhere but the fish must still have been holding in deeper water below the ice. I don't know.

If they're 1/2 cm long or shorter, they're probably the same ones we get here, too. Always wondered if the fish were keying in on them, perhaps prior to emerging. Kind of moot, since our trout season doesn't open til April 15. brent

The little blacks are the first hatch of the year here in NJ. Showing up in February and March, often when there's still snow on the ground. This lake doesn't have trout, just bass, pickerel and sunfish. All warm water species, so the stoneflies have a huge advantage in the cold temps.

Geez, Cliff. Four pills once a day is NOT the same thing as one pill four times a day.
