A few weeks ago I was looking for a small minnow pattern and thought of the Cypert minnow but they seem to be a little bulkier and more heavy than I wanted in a fly so I started experimenting and this is the fly I came up with. It's probably not original but it's worked really well on small bass and perch for me in the past few weeks:

This first one is the pattern I've had the most luck with, it is a bit chunky but the fish like it, tied on a #10 hook:

I got some narrower mylar tubing and tied a few on #12 hooks:

I use foam tubing for the eyes, this helps it to sink slowly which is what I wanted for fishing the skinny 2-3' deep water I'm usually working. The core braid gives a nice color to the
mid-section of the fly that shows through the mylar.

I like throwing this fly about 18" below a hopper pattern like this:

Hope you like the pattern.

I like where you're going with the mylar minnow-less bulk and the foam eyes are a great idea for a slow sink. Have you considered using mono eyes fro a slightly faster sink. with floating line it would still "pull up" near the surface with each strip. Variants like the make tying very interesting and more fun.

I like it. Smaller is better in my opinion. I do like the idea of mono or xs bead chain eyes. Image

Thanks guys, I never thought of mono eyes, I'll give that a shot. I did tie a few with small bead chain eyes but I like the foam ones better myself.
