Last Saturday after my fishing trip, i was walking back to the car and there was hundreds of these flies hatching on my car. I was in a farm field boarder along side of the pond. I have some questions. Do these fly come up from the water and fly a short distance and shed or do they crawl from the ground on my car?

Pictures and Thanks!

The Gill Guy,

Hi Gill Guy-

I believe this to male imago to be a mayfly of genus Caenis. The mature nymph crawls onto shore, then transforms to winged form as a subimago, then flies to large object (like your car), then transforms to an imago, and flies off to join a mating swarm.
