Opted for the canal this morning. Found a little feeder creek that I hadn't noticed before. Hooked up after a few casts.

I immediately called my fishing pal and invited him to join in. I've fished with this guy for two decades. It was he who handed me my first rod as a gift for my 22nd birthday. I remember looking at it and thinking "what am I gonna do with this". I wasn't at all interested in fishing.

He'd arrived at our usual spot. I let him have the little feeder, as that seemed to be the trick. Eventually, his rod doubled over. I watched him land the fish and look up at me with disbelief.

This fish took a plastic worm! That's pretty uncommon!

Eventually, I got the spot

The biggest of the trip. Once it slowed, I announced I was taking him to the hot spot where I'd hooked two dozen fish on the previous trip.

And...

I remember sitting by the river, at 22, thinking about how much I didn't have in common with my father. It wasn't a bad relationship, we were just two different people. I began to regret not spending much time with him, and decided I would change that.

So, I rigged up that spinning rod, and we've been almost inseparable since!

There's a lot more to fishing than catching fish.

Great report. Not enough can be said about building bridges to our fathers. It's never to late (or too soon) to heal that paternal relationship. I'm convinced it's one of the most important, and maybe even a necessary, step in personal growth for men. My father has no interest in fishing but we've built other bridges.
