We’ve been enjoying some unusually warm weather here in NJ. I’m trying to take as much advantage of it as I can between work and family responsibilities. This includes getting out on one of my town’s private community lakes in my son-in-law’s kayak.

I usually use UL spin and target bass on this lake but my Echo Solo 3 wt was calling to me on this particular day so I headed the siren’s song and I’m glad I did.

Started with sub surface flies and caught a few sunfish, yellow perch and a small bass. I was catching but the bite wasn’t really on. Maybe it was the clear blue sky?

Well, despite the clear skies, I tied on a very small Sneaky Pete top water that was fresh out of the package. I’d been lamenting that the summer had passed with me doing very little with poppers, so forget the rules and go for it.

First cast and a big bluegill slurps it up. A good sign. Casting along the edges of some Lilly pads produced hits from good sized gills repeatedly and I was having a blast. One cast to the edge of an island got crushed immediately by a largemouth, adding to the excitement.

Caught a lot of fish and had a hell of a good time. Pretty much a perfect day with an UL fly rod. A second chance at summer.

Nice report and nice selection of fun fish. Love fishing from the kayak too.
I am selling my Pescador but will fish from my Dabchick.
The knot attatched to your popper in the last picture Looks complicated?

Dabchick, dinghy? Why are you selling the kayak?

The knot is probably just a double Davy. Only easier knot is a regular Davy, which I don’t trust. Or it might be a clinch. Nothing fancy going on here. Carry on. ;-)

Great report and a nice variety of fish. The perch is colored up really well.

The Daylite is a Walmart variety sit on top with a square stern. 8' that can carry with one hand. The Perception Sport is 65 lbs (It is a Tarpon Hull) and I am getting a little older.

I get it linecaster. My wife and I used an 80+ lb tandem kayak for years but it got to the point where we almost never went out anymore because my joints just couldn’t handle the weight. Best thing ever was getting singles but my Wilderness Systems Tarpon 12 will at some point prove to be too much too. Hoping that point is still years off.
