My first trip of the year was a bust. Headed up to Little Stoney Creek to chase some native Brookies. Didn’t go so well.
Temp while I was putting on the waders.

Ice formed on my first cast, and my 3wt Recon felt like I was casting my 8wt. I made a total of three casts before I decided to call it quits.

You are a tougher man than I (or really desperate for some fishing).

Outside of just wanting to get outside I can’t imagine the fishing being very good in those small mountain streams in January.

The last fish I caught in 2017--between Christmas and New Year's, it was in the teens.

It took 4 casts to get the fish.

There was ice on my guides as I walked up the path :-)

Well more open water this go around on Little Stoney Creek. Warmed up today to 55° or so at the house, but was still 38° in the canyon while fishing. Managed to not freeze up this time, but went fishless again on this little creek.

Notice the curtain of ice from the log. Open water in front of and behind. Thought it looked pretty cool.

All kinds of open water to fish but I was skunked.

Back in the sixties I learned to love those little streams. Fish or no fish; each trip is a wonderful experience. Even though I still prefer salt water; these photographs evoke great memories and more than a little bit of envy. Enjoy your gifts from nature! The fish will come.

Keep that stream a secret! I drive up from just south of Charlotte, NC to fish it a few times a year. Magical little place.
