It had been two years since I last visited this small stream.

The Sage ZXL 8' 2 wt. may have been slightly long for this small place but it's one of my favorite rods.

The last time I was here the fish were about equally divided between rainbows and brook trout.
This time it was mostly rainbows. I caught a few brookies, all small. There were lots of rainbows. They were very aggressive and energetic. I lost many more than I landed.

Here are some small ones.

Then I caught the biggest one I've ever caught here - somewhere between 11 and 12 inches. Nice fish for this stream.

I was fishing with a black woolly bugger and this fish hit it and just nicked itself on the hook.

I figured it wouldn't hit that fly again so I changed to the Copper John that you can see in the picture. One drift through the pool and it grabbed it.

The water temperature was 51°, so the water in the hills is just getting where we want it.

That is a really pretty little stream, and natiuve brook trout are my favorites, although there are none of them near my present home.

A situation like that seems perfect for some selective catch and release fishing. That is, you could very well catch brook trout and immediately release them into the water, while any legal sized rainbows you could catch and release... into the frying pan!

Of course, the hard-core C&R guys might disagree with such an approach, but at least it's one way to tip the scales slightly in favor of the native brook trout. They need all the help they can get.

Always surprises me when there are trout that big in a stream that small.

Nice work.
