Not the most successful fishing trip but today was my first opportunity to try for my favorite fish. I was supposed to be at the Ultralight gathering in Mason but had to withdraw. Second best was to go for Blue Gill at my favorite water on my kayak, before launching I used my 3 weight with a shooting head that I made and a Slickshooter running line. I made my first cast and caught my first Blue Gill and with a Mop fly that I fished for the first time. Lost a nice bass then had to wrap it up.

Glad to see you’re out on the water even if you couldn’t make the gathering. Gills + bass = FUN!

Thanks Knotty, I have not been on the water on my kayak for over 6 months. The second Blue Gill and the bass reminded me why I like ultra light flyfishing. They put up giant performances.

Thanks Strummer, so far the Blue Gills are few and far between, that is the bigger ones, I fish a minimum size 10 hook, not being keen on the little fish. As Cliff said to me the biggies are still deep.

Yep, I went to Southlake yesterday and caught 25-30 bluegill and 3 redear, all under 6". That told me that the big ones are still deep and not ready to spawn yet. I was hoping to catch the redear on the beds but they were nowhere to be found. Another week or two and it should be good fishing.

Nice looking fish Eric, that bass is a good size especially on ul.
Cliff, the Gills I am catching haven't spawned yet either. I am thankful
for the extended season. After the spawn my gill catch drops off.

Jim, that bass gave me a nice fight, after that I hooked into a much bigger bass in the 3-4lb range. The big one began deep, strong and slow. I initially thought it was a catfish, then it jumped and when I saw its size I slacked off a bit trying to get my GoPro going it went into weed then the line went slack, serious mumbling time.
