I saw a fly fishing documentary some time ago that the bone fish were tagged and showed to have moved great distances. I think it was conducted in the Bahamas?

Yes, they move great distances mainly to spawn.

A study from the bonefish and tarpon trust showed they basically remain within a 1km area other than at spawning times.
