Got this one on the 1wt a couple days ago. One good run into the backing and surrendered after one more short run. Just a couple minutes from hook set to hand. Had to wait months for the sea to calm down. It's surfing season over here. Sent from my LG-H700 using Tapatalk

Roblepl: Amazing! I have questions: Am I right that you are using a 1wt 6 ft rod? And you're tossing some sort of weighted/beadhead fly? Can you tell me what size hook that is, and how far would you estimate you are casting that fly? (obviously far enough to catch an easily spooked fish like a bonefish!)
Depending on your answers, I may just pack up my flyrods and take up golf. brent

Hello Brent, lol... Here I go. Yes its a Maxcatch 1wt 6ft rod mated to a Piscifun 3/4 Sword Reel. The rod sucks (or maybe its me) with a 1wt line to I have a cheap Maxcatch 2wt line on it these days. The fly is a size 8 Bonefish Crack, my own concoction. It has medium bead chain eyes to make it sink and swim right. The hook is a Mustad 2330-DT which I turn into a J bend with the help of the vise. Originally they are Kirby. It's easier if you find Mustad 3407. I cannot find them size 8 locally. I can cast this setup 42 to 45 feet maximum. My bonefish are about 20 to 30 feet from me most of the time. Rarely I need to cast long. Sometimes they get too close I cannot even cast as they get, literally, under the rod. Below is the photo of my Bonefish Crack Fly (please take on golf only on days when it's to windy to cast a 1wt, other than that... Tight lines!) Sent from my LG-H700 using Tapatalk

Most fly fishers going after trout have in their mind light rod tiny fly and are surprised when on a 2 weight I cast a #8 with lead eyes. #8 6xlong minnow flies getting 50 plus foot casts. Roblepl well done on the 1 weight.

Thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions. I cannot imagine bonefish at my feet. I've only encountered them once (in Cuba) while snorkelling. I found them very skittish. Anyway, nice looking fly. I think my approach to rod weight/fly size has been to focus not so much on how heavy a fly the rod (and I) can cast, as on what fly sizes the rod is most adept at casting - its how I justify multiple rods in weights 3 to 9 . You've opened my eyes considerably. I love fishing the smallies on my home stream with a 3 wt, because they can usually be coaxed to take #12/#10 muddlers, but sometimes the big ones need a #6 beadhead wooly bugger. Perhaps I've been sacrificing fun on the alter of finesse. RE: golf. Not to worry. Not gonna happen. Never have played the game, although I love it dearly for all of the people it keeps off the streams and lakes. I feel the same about virtually all spectator sports as well. brent

After justifying multiple rods... I use my 1wt 90 percent of the time. I recently ordered the one below in 3wt to fight some baby tarpon. I'm so happy with Maxcatch Rods that I put my 4wt TFO Professional up for sale on ebay.
Bones are very shy and scare easily. Where I fish there are lot of rocks. Many times I'm either on top of a rock or behind it not to scare them away. If I stay still, they may get super close. I don't think they can see in great detail when the tide is low and the are in about a foot of water.

Looks like that one cost a little more than your ultralight 1 wt.

$99 with reel included. Lifetime warranty on the rod, 10 years the reel.
This after using code Friday at checkout. Lucky me their black Friday Special was valid last Friday.

Hard to beat a lifetime warranty, and 10 years is very good, too.
If you get 1/100 the amount of service out of that rod that you have out of your ultralight, it will have been money well spent. What you've done with that ultralight 1 wt has been truly epic.

Thanks!
These rods are really tough. The reel does a very good job too.
This is going to be the first time I try a Maxcatch reel, post a review when I get it.

I have that rod too. It's the one that helped me stop my first bonefish.
I'm planning on selling it although it's a great rod.
I'm little by little becoming a Maxcatch fan.

Do the Maxcatch rods have a parabolic bend or progressive? That first bonefish on the TFO Pro 2 weight makes me proud to own one. Very nice catch.

I'm not much of a hand to get rid of stuff. If I buy something, it's because I wanted it. I am also a firm believer in redundancy. Two is one, and one is none.
I'm fixin to move to Montana in a few years after I retire, and I'm starting to lean a bit towards longer rods. Not sure how my knees are gonna hold up, and I may end up doing a lot of fishing from a boat at a local reservoir I ran across about 15 miles from where I wanna land.
You keep posting, roblepl. I am greatly enjoying watching you catch all these fish on your 1 wt.
