Starting a 000wt build. This will be my 5th rod build but my lightest so far has been a sage one 3wt.
I am looking into options for the reel seat and insert and have had a difficult time finding one that really fits the rod. I don't really want the sliding ring style. The one I bought is an aluminum down locking skeleton, but seems way too big for the butt of the rod. I would like some input into what people have found that fits well, without having to add a bunch of masking tape rings.

There aren't many commercial reel seats available with a 0.25" center hole. The smallest most go is 0.312".
I've pushed and glued a 5/16" dowel into the 0.312" ones and then drilled it to the size I needed. If you don't have the tools for drilling a nice concentric center hole, you could find a local woodworker to do it for you. It's easy enough with the right tools.
I'd call the manufacturer of the hardware you purchased and ask if you can get a suitable insert.
Lemke, Strubel and Bellinger are all good. REC is good, too

Thanks for the idea. I kinda feel like that may be the heavier of the two options ( dowel vs tape).

Also those companies only offer the lock rings and not the threaded nut locking option.

REC and Bellinger offer screw-locking seats in small sizes. You can probably still special order the insert drilled to your specs.

Any lighter wood will probably come out ahead. With tape, you have to fill the rest of the space with something, usually epoxy paste. That's heavier than many woods.
