Building a Dan Craft Sig IV with a matte finish, basically what looks to be like plain graphite with no topcoat. It doesn't rub off onto your hand but it does seem rather raw. Dan suggested using a urethane spray if I wanted to finish it but not sure what to use. Would a spray spar urethane be ok or a poly be better? I'm thinking I just want a clear matte finish, nothing glossy. Thanks.

Preast, I would go to hobbytown USA. The brand Pactra sells a flexible paint for RC car bodies. I believe the sell a matte clear. If they don't have it, I would go with a spar varnish in the desired finish. I have never tried to do a graphite rod like that. But I have used spar varnish on a Bamboo rod a while back. It's a wall hanger, but it turned out nice and when I flexed it no finish flaked off.

Thanks for the suggestion. I realized my original post made it sound like I *want* to use a topcoat. I'm not set on it, so I guess I'm also hoping someone can confirm it's just fine the way it is, particularly anyone who's built on this blank.

It is perfectly fine. I know of no manufactures out there that actually market a blank that requires sealing.

Cool, thanks. I was not looking forward to messing with it and it looks good as is.

I have that blank in a 2 wt, unfinished, and I have fished it several times with no problem.

Yeah, it's fine. I have a couple "unfinished" rods. They stealthier.
