Ye Olde English Fly Shop 3pc 2wt. Nothing special on this one, but I thought I'd show this one I just finished for those wondering about it. Also still learning, so advice/critiques welcome. I figure even the economy blanks can be dressed up a bit, so there's Lemke, Snake Brand, some pretty decent cork... and managed to keep it under 100 bucks. The insert was turned from a spalted alder blank that was thrown in for free on an order, sort of a second I guess. I found it interesting enough for this build. Thread is Rattan w/chestnut accents, and Kimono Sesame on the guides.

I wanted something for the smallest of fishing opportunities, sort of a mini rod, for small urban creeks for panfish, bass and the local Rio Grande perch (cichlids). Oh yeah, and cheap. This is definitely not one of those stiff UL blanks. Very limber, into the grip, but no noodle either. I plan on using it as a light 1wt, which seemed fine in a test cast.

Thanks for posting that rod here on this forum. It looks like a very nice rod, and it’s refreshing to see an inexpensive blank that is true to its stated line weight or even below it. I’m not usually a fan of wooden inserts on UL fly rods, but you have found an excellent use for that beautiful yet terrible alder wood. As any north-country brook trout fisherman knows, tag alders are at once a blessing and a curse. They are a blessing because they effectively keep the crowds off some of the most productive waters. But they are a curse because they also make it nearly impossible to cast a fly into some of the best spots.

Thanks. I guess I have heard that before about alder being a nuisance but it didn't occur to me when I was working with it. I guess it has some redeeming value. Actually that insert is a bit over the top for my usual taste. I just knew I'd never find another use for it, and I couldn't really seem to like any of the other woods I had with that orange blank. Not a fan of cork seats either. The LC14 hardware is so light, the wood is almost better to balance it out a little. The whole rod only weighs 1.85oz.
