Well, right off the bat I messed-up. Went straight to the fishing reports section and posted some pics without introducing myself. Apologies.

Anyway, howdy. I live in Central Texas and work down on the coast, where I grew up. In the past I have mostly fished saltwater, most recently almost exclusively with a fly rod. Just started getting back to my local streams in the Hill Country, and discovering UL fly rods has made it a lot of fun.

I tie a little, too. And enjoy whiskey when I'm not on the water.

Anyhow, still plowing through all the threads here -- lots of great info. Thanks.

They're not much to look at, SharkBait. Sometimes the fish don't notice they're ugly, and I can't stop myself from tying them ....

Nothing wrong with those flies, the fish are the critic's, the proof is in the eating.
I like the second picture, there is the proof.

welcome!
Nice ties by the way- any of those especially the last shrimp pattern should work well.

Where on the coast did you grow up?

Les

Hi Les -- Thanks. I grew up in Rockport, Texas. I work between Corpus and Ingleside now on The World's Worst Skiff (a harbort tug).

Les, I've fished from Christmas Bay up to Smith Point. I still really want to do a trip up the Trinity (Stripers?!) and also Village Creek. My best bud lives in Houston, so we'll get it done one of these days .... Cheers! Aaron

Welcome aboard! That shrimp pattern would work well in freshwater as well as salt. Most people have no idea that there are mysis shrimp in virtually every freshwater lake around here and that they are a large part of the diet of most fish. Bream would feast on that pattern!

Excellent point. It might also serve as a crawfish. We have very few "red" or "orange" crawfish in our rivers -- most are tan, gray or nearly translucent. At least the little ones.

I tie that shrimp on a #2 for salt ... I could take it down to a 6 or 8, maybe even 10, pretty easily!

I could imagine a squid attacking that shrimp pattern under the lights in a canal somewhere. Nice tie.

I never did well with humpys and quit tying them. What do you find they work well for?

The first day I threw them I caught a couple of bass and probably 25 sunfish in an hour. They have been a bust since, but I'm not giving up. Two different color combos that first day. I should note that I'm substituting bucktail for elk hair. I've used everything from pheasant to marabou to hackle to squirrel tail for the tails.
