About half a year ago, I picked up a Cabelas PT 8 foot 3wt for a song. I tried to sell it here and there, at the same time as fishing it hear and there. Sometimes I find I love a rod the first time I take it fishing...sometimes the love comes over time.

Here is one or two thoughts I have on the rod, first it is really light...just 2.5 oz on my digital scale. The rod seems like it has a sort of a mystery action...somewhere between medium and medium fast. I've tried three lines on it, settling on overlining it to a WF 4. I am an overliner, with my casting style very slow and methodically. I find I am happiest in my fishing, when I just slow down and I find uplining rods to do just that. I like big open loops but enough line weight to punch through the ever present Idaho wind casting whatever fly I need to.

At the same time, I have been fishing a Redington CT 7'6" 2wt. It is a tad softer rod and a wonderful tool for light duties. It weights only 3 tenths of an oz. lighter than the Cabelas PT 3wt yet has half the back bone should I need to cast in the wind or a larger fly...or hopefully a larger fish. If the PT 3wt was a 4pc. I would discard the CT 2wt (that is a 4pc) and never look back. For most of my fishing, I like a rod that offers a light presentation, with some back bone but light. I think the PT 3wt is just such a rod.

I paired the rod with a USA made Martin MC45 reel. Nice set up.

Dave

All I can say is Wow, the community has some wonderful UL combos. Here's my modest UL outfit.
Image
  • TFO 7' 9" Finesse 3 weight
  • Ross Vexsis 1.5
  • SA GPX WF-3-F
  • I believe I have about 75 yards of 20lb backing just to fill out the spool

I had gotten the TFO combo at Cabela's with their RLS 1, and the reel was a little heavy. I bought the new Vexsis as a demo at 50% off to pair with a March Brown Hidden Water 9' 4 weight 7-piece pack rod. The extra ferrules for the 7-piece made that rod too heavy for the Ross. Swapping reels between the two outfits nicely balanced them both.

My UL rod of choice for midge fishing is my Sage TXL-F 00 wt. I matched it up with a Sage Click 1 and a Quiet Taper DT 00 wt. The whole package with a leader and size 16 bead head nymph weighs in at exactly 4 oz.

For my Czech nymphing I use my Greys 10' 2 wt. I pair it up with a Albright reel and a DT 1 wt line to keep the line from pulling the leader back through the guides.

I have 2 favorites

First is my Carpenter Bros Bamboo fly rod http://carpenterbrosbamboorods.blogspot.com/ 8'2 2/3wt 2 piece hollow built right around 3.2 ounces. I use it with 3wt Ross Evo LT in copper.

The rod casts well, casts like a dream. Fit and finish is excellent. Just came back from Hot Creek were I caught a 17in Brown on it, handled the fish quite well.

My other outfit I like is the same reel with a Greys Streamflex (older version) 10ft 3wt.

I love Euro Nymphing with the Streamflex, have caught a 6 pounder on it. The reach is nice on larger rivers like the Kern.

All the old timers have seen this before.

This is my Dorber 7'6 2WT "Ultraweave." Quite possibly the slowest rod in existence! It's takes forever to load on the back cast, tells you loud and clear when to start the forward motion and flexes deep to the handle with a fish on. It's super sensitive at the tip and a lot of fun to fish.

I built this rod up a few years ago. The hardware is from Joel Lemke and I patina-ed to match the guides, I turned the reel seat from a piece of buckeye burl and designed and turned the cork also using a wood lathe in the wood craft shop on FT Campbell. It's super light teamed up with the Redington CT2/3. I added dark green backing to complete the look and it's got a DT 2wt loaded in the picture. I've thought about underlining it with a 1wt line, but haven't had the chance yet.

The nice crappie in the photo is the perfect match for the rod.

Hi Don  Im a newbie to ultra light , normally use 9' 5# or 6#  but have sometimes felt over gunned even on stocked rainbows and certinally on wild Loch brownies often 10"-12". However i borrowed my Dads Sonik sports 8' 3/4# and used my Greys "G" series and took it too a local stocked fishery, catching the above rainbows approx 3lb each Image I was pleasantly suprised the little rod handled them with no trouble. And i could cast about as far as my 5# so a win win.

Decided to treat myself to the 9' 3# Vision Cult, however my little Greys reels just looked silly on a 9' rod so a good excuse to treat myself to a Snowbe Geo Image well that what i told the wife ! Almost ordered a Vision Cult 8' 2# but as a newbie to ultra light a bit scary see how i get on with the 9' 3# plan to try it on river and out in the float tube on Lochs.

Those are gorgeous fish :applause . Reminds me of a trip just outside Laramie WY, spring fed lake loaded with scuds, and football sized trout.
