Okay, since we've had so few posts on this site lately here's something to get you excited. Yes, I did use my 3-wt fly rod but I had an ultralight spinning reel and a crappie rig with two minnows on it. Is that "half-fly fishing"? I went to Lake Ray Hubbard near Plano and fished the bridge pilings close to the bottom on Wednesday and brought home 20 really nice crappie with one 15", 3 - 14", and several between 12" - 13". These had really big shoulders and were real fatties. Fish fry coming up!

Spin on a light fly rod is great fun for crappies. Good eats too.

Cliff: I'm appalled that you used a spinning reel on your fly rod. We need to talk about this over a fish fry. Can you pick me up at the airport? I'll need to see exactly where this all took place.

Come on up JIm and come on down Brent and we'll invite the UFF people to a huge fish fry and we'll all go catch some crappie, or maybe we'd better all go catch some crappie first and THEN have a fish fry. I caught 13 more on Friday. Then Saturday I went to Denison Dam below Lake Texoma and caught 18 catfish and a 8.3# carp on a clouser on my 7-wt.

Unfortunately I can't fish the LMF because my knees are too bad to go wading. I miss that place. Getting old sucks! Maybe Les can set up something there for the rest of you guys.

The problem seems to be more one of mathematics (which I detest) than technique. The way you describe it, that comes up to "1/3 fly-fishing", unless of course we consider the two minnows to be a natural streamer dropper rig. Now this is getting too difficult for me to calculate.

Its a slippery slope you're describing. Next thing you know, people will be putting pieces of chicken feather and fur from rabbits on their hooks. Maybe even pieces of deer carcass! Where will it end????? brent

If we're not really careful, fly fishers could even be found again scavenging along the roadsides for material that comes from road-kill.

Now you know fly tiers are honorable people and would never do anything like that! And Hillary would never lie, either.

joe the plumber wrote: I thought I was the only weirdo picking up roadkill to tie flies Utilizing roadkill as a source of material is a time-honored tradition among fly-tiers. But now, with so many others taking up the sport, there may be stiff competition along prime roadsides.

Les, I'm sure that you remember my famous thread on TFR about roadkill. It went for almost 30 pages and we had a lot of fun on it. It was Pearow's favorite thread, right Gene! I think I'll start another one on this forum.
