I just acquired an Orvis Ultrafine 7'9" 2wt. in excellent to perfect condition. The smallest reel I have is an Orvis Battenkill BarStock III. NOT a good fit.
Does anyone have this rod and what reel do you use or suggest for it? BBS I maybe?

Jim

I have the Orvis BBS1 on my 0 weight and for the price it's a great value and a good looking little reel.

Jim, you will want a reel in the 3.5-4oz range, and if you can find a Battenkill 3/4 click pawl reel, that would work out ok, or maybe a BBS II.

You've sure got lots of options.....

modern vs. vintage

click/pawl vs. disk drag

country of origin

material of construction

Let us know what you decide on!

I'd go with a BBS I. I have one on my 7'6" 1 wt Orvis and it balances perfectly. It also *looks* great on the rod--not too large in diameter. I know they just raised the prices on them, but they're also running a "buy the reel get a free spool" promotion right now.

Loaded with line & backing it comes in at 4 oz, and it looks great in either silver or black:

Jerry...I love when you show mine ;) I cannot suggest many other reels, other than because it is a longer 2wt, use the BBS II for weight and LOAD it with backing.

Hi Andy, they're good looking reels! The Orvis 2 wt is only 3" longer than my 1 wt so I think the BBS I would balance it just right, and I think the slightly smaller diameter of the BBS I would look better on the rod. But hey, that's just me :-)

Actually, I got a day above zero on Monday and tried a buddy's Orvis MidArbor II with DT3F line and the reel balanced quite well. The DT line stunk though (never liked DT line). So, I figured, let me try my BBS III with WF4F line as I had just rejected it right off without trying it; great balance and the line cast better than the DT, however, I'm going to try a WF2 and WF3 to see which casts better as the WF4, in my opinion was a little heavy for 50' + casts.
It also balanced well with a Redington GD and CD 3/4 reel, so I think my only concern is the line. I know, it's hard turning down a spare spool with the purchase of a reel, but we'll see what happens at the Somerset show in NJ next week. We all know about "impulse" buys! Thanks.

Jim

The Lamson LP 1 and LP 1 lite are two out of production reels that show up on the big auction site and "at the moment" are in the same price range as the little bar stock orvis. I have both Lamson reels and use them on my Sage 0 wt. and T&T 2 wts. After a long search I finally located and purcased a "new" out of production Sage XP 2 wt. at a reasonable price and have one a Lamson Litespeed 1 set up for it. The little LP 1's really match up nice with these lighter weight rods.

CHunting, welcome and lovely gill! Also, if interested in an LP-1, I can point you to one. If you would be interested, let me know via PM. The LP-1 has a disc drag, while the LP-1 Lite is a click pawl so you have your choice!

If you want to use an older vintage reel, I use an Edwards Mfg. No. 30 reel on my 1wt. It's a simple click pawl and it balances nicely on a short, light rod. You can usually find one eBay for next to nothing.

I also use a Horrocks and Ibbotson Sportcraft 60 on my 7ft, 3wt rod. It's slightly heavier than the Edwards 30 and has a classic look that I like. They periodically become available on eBay and it won't break the bank either. An all Black version exists but they seem to be rare breed.

dhoover8448,
Welcome to Ultralight fly fishers! You have some excellent examples of lightweight vintage reels. I have an Edwards 40 and it too is light but larger in size. That 30 looks like a better choice for lighter shorter rods.

A Gayle Simplicity 2 would fit the bill for UL!

Les, I may have to adjust the foot on it to squeeze it on a slide band seat.

Here is the Sherman tank of the vintage UL reel world- The Airex Ablette 370. It's Hardy style clicker will put most fish in their place, and at 2 7/8" it weighs 4.7 ounces with backing and line. Deduct an ounce for backing and line for actual weight.
