I did one of these earlier with the reels I had but thought I'd run it one more time adding the Hardy. All reels hold a complete fly line and are filled with backing. In order of weight--lightest to heaviest: White River Classic UL - 0 wt line Hardy Flyweight - 3 wt line Orvis BBS I - 1 wt line Orivs Battenkill Large Arbor I (original) - 2 wt line Lamson Velocity 1 (2008) - 4 wt line A couple new additions: Sage 3100 with complete Sage Quiet DT00F line (00 wt.) *and* a measured 75 yards of #12 backing Orvis CFO I23 and 1/2 of a Cortland 444 DT5F line and about 25 yards of #20 backing Side by side more side by side

I love your smallest two reels! If you don't mind, what scale is that and where is it from?

It's an Escali P115W. I think I got it off of Amazon for $25 or so.

After seeing yours I had my wife buy me that same scale for Christmas. It's come in handy. I weigh lines with it too and convert grams to grains..I really want to get a flyweight..can't afford it right now. Thanks for the post. Janus

Yeah the scale is pretty decent. I've had it for a couple years and use it all the time. I especially like being able to weigh packages, print out the postage online, and then drop by the post office and drop them off in the box without ever having to wait in line :-)

I'm looking on the bass pro website and I only see the white river UL in black. is your reel an older model or am I missing something?

Justin, I just added the CFO and 3100 to the first post and I'll put them here as well: Sage 3100 with complete Sage Quiet DT00F line (00 wt.) *and* a measured 75 yards of #12 backing Orvis CFO I23 and 1/2 of a Cortland 444 DT5F line and about 25 yards of #20 backing Left to right: Orvis original (made in England) LA I, Sage 3100, Orvis BBS I, and Orvis CFO 123 I'm very tempted to sell the Orvis LA I and get another Sage 3100

Not a bad idea FishHiker. With my Ross Colorado 0, I have 2 extra spools. Had three once and sold one when I got my Colorado 1. That was a mistake, I should've kept the 3rd extra spool. You can put 1WF or 2DT or create sink tips. carry the spools for when the need arises to change.

FishingHiker wrote: Why buy another 3100 just buy more spools. Several reasons... maybe not *good* reasons, but good enough for me :

Like J, I think reels are generally overpriced, BUT I think spare spools are outrageously overpriced. For example I recently paid $140 for a brand new Orvis CFO. A spare spool for the same reel is $110. I much rather kick in an additional $30 and get another *functional* reel.
When I fish with other people I usually take several rods to mess around with. I like being able to keep them all strung up so everyone gets a chance to try whichever rod they want. In this case spare spools are a pain in the butt.
Related to number 2; I like having my nicest reels on my favorite rods. If I take a newbie out fishing I want for both of us to be able to use my nicest gear... at the same time.
I frequently buy new gear and sell old gear. If you keep your gear in excellent condition, In my experience you can expect to lose at least 25% to 35% of what you paid for a good reel when you sell it. But it seems like you're lucky to get even half of what you paid for spare spools.
Not only do you lose more money on spare spools but they are much harder to sell. If you list a reel and three spare spools for sale you will usually have someone offer to buy the reel only. And selling spare spools without a reel is even harder--unless you happen to have an extremely popular model.
This has just been my experience over the last 18 years, Your experience may differ dramatically. Jerry

I don't ever want to sell my 3100 or the spools. My 3100 spools came from e-bay one was $50.00 and the other was $80.00 both were new. Heck of a lot cheaper than $140-$200 for a new 3100 on e-bay.

Red Truck has 3100 spools new for $62. As I said--my reasoning might not make sense to anyone but me. If I buy a 3100 spool and put a 3 wt line on it to use with my just completed 5'10" 'glass 3 wt it would probably balance very nicely. But I can already see instances where I may want to fish my 00 wt *and* my 3 wt on the same outing--and both would require the same reel. If I had a rod/reel combo that I used all the time and I wanted a sink-tip and full-sinking line for this combo I wouldn't hesitate to buy more spools. I just very rarely ever use more than one line for a given rod.
And unlike a lot of people, I have very few pieces of gear that I would not consider selling. I really like the 3100 but if I come across a reel I like more and it balances my 00 wt even better, then I won't hesitate to sell the 3100 although I have some other reels I'd probably sell first.
I enjoy trying out new gear almost as much as fishing and the only way I can afford it is to sell a lot of rods and reels to pay for the new ones as they come in. I have a few favorite rods that I'll probably never sell but I don't get quite as attached to reels.

I like to be able to buy spare spools most of the time. I have two extra spools for my English made Orvis Battenkill 3/4. One spool for 2wt, one for 3wt, and the last has a 4wt line on it. Not all reels have reasonably priced spare spools. Jerry's CFO is a good example. I figure that a spool should cost half the price of the reel, otherwise I'll pass. I'd like to get a White River Classic UL reel for myself. I had to part with it today, and all the 2wt rods in the shoot-out. I just wish that Bass Pro would have sense enough to offer spare spools for the UL. I may just end up getting another Dennison and a spare spool. For $75.00 you can buy the reel and a spare spool.
J.
