I've been painting my thin wall white pvc with the plastic paint they sell at wally world. It sticks pretty good if you wipe the pvc down beforehand with acetone although it will chip pretty easily. I paint it and use duct tape on the bottom so I only have to buy one cap which saves a little! (Cliff is gonna laugh when he reads this because he knows how frugal I am!!!)-p- Pearow, If you lightly sand it with some fairly fine sandpaper and then wipe down with acetone, the paint will stick much better. For building rod cases if you can find Schedule 30 PVC you will find it is much lighter than Schedule 40. It uses the same fittings and caps but it has a larger inside diameter than the equivalent Sch 40 so you can use a smaller size.

I use the thin 1-1/4" pvc pipe. Much lighter than sch 40. Unforuntately can't find it in 1.5" for the salwtater rod

And they can be had in colors! If you can find one a T17 tube protector is 2 1/8" diameter

Brian, thanks for this really cheap practical idea. I have used PVC pipe for years, but it is heavy, and if shipping a rod it's expensive.

I have a friend who uses one of those light tubes. It does offer some protection. I decided to try one of these, medium size: http://www.tenkarabum.com/rod-cases.html . Harder case, and adjustable length. Maybe a bit bulky for just one rod, but I almost always take a backup.

Black ABS plastic pipe and fittings look a bit more, shall we say, professional. ABS is a little more expensive than Schedule 40 white PVC but the jet black tubes look cool and are tough as nails. ABS pipe is sometimes hard to source and they use a different cleaner and glue also. I made travel tubes for all of my rods with ABS and they've been down the road many times and show no wear.
