I'm making a research about the lightest fly reels in commerce and I found these polycarbonate reels, born for ice fishing but I think easy to use even in fly fishing.
They are cheap, one for sure has a simple brake and the diameter is even not so small to have the benefits of mid to large arbor reels.
And the weight is incredibly low: from 27 grams to 47. Maybe they are the lightest ultralight fly reels in commerce?
...they are a little "colored" hehe nice for who is not too much "serious" about fly fishing: it's a game at the end and these are toys :).
I think that I will try for sure one of them, the lightest with the brake on the side, the green one.

Looks light but I'm not sure they'd hold up to a rock hopping day of blue lining. I'd think they're more meant for not moving around as done with ice fishing. Not much danger of being dropped or banged around.

Thanks for the post. I like light reels and always ready to look at something different.

Must try.
They are for sure not so complete like these, but these weight 84 grams, who means anyway an ultralight reel (I have 3 of these and for me they are pretty perfect except the lightness: sturdy, silent, perfect color who doesn't reflect light, free when you catch and with adjustable silent brake in cork disks when you release, mid arbor.)

Btw you can find even metal reels, but they weigh a little more (55 grams) and they are a little smaller (diameter 5,5 cm) like this (1,7 $) and not shure they can contain a plastic fly line. Maybe one half or a silk (or dyneema) one.

(found making a search on ebay using "ice fishing reel" and "price + shipping: lowest first)

Do those reels have anything to prevent overrun?

At only 6 or 7 bucks you've got nothing, or more accurately, little, to loose.

Several years ago, while living in a cold climate, I did quite a bit of ice fishing, usually using a click-pawl fly reel and a fly-rod tip or UL spinning rod tip rigged up to a fly rod reel seat and grip and very light line. It was great fun. So, if one can successfully use a fly reel for ice fishing, why not use an ice-fishing reel for fly-fishing?
