This is a simple fly to tie, I tied this one in a Gill favorite (Olive). You can tie in what ever colors you like best, the black one I fished the other day worked Great. Size 10 2X hook and I used a white 5/32 bead on this one. Good luck...and please post any pictures you take of the fish you catch on this "marvel of the deep".....LOL............Don in SC

That one has to be pretty productive. Have you considered using rabbit fur cut from a skin or zonker strip for the tail instead of marabou? I've stopped using marabou, and use rabbit fur for tails these days, it offers better movement, and is way more durable.

Thanks J, I will give that a try. I use marabou in a lot of my flies and it seems to be getting more expensive and the quality isn't what it used to be either...............Don in SC

Just got back from a good evening using this fly to catch a nice LMB, some big rock bass and a whole pile of pumpkinseeds from a no-name overfished lake near my place. Some big p-seeds for my area as well (Eastern Ontario), a few pushing 8". Put up a good fight on my 5wt, would have been a blast with a UL rod. Thanks for another great pattern Don!

I've started tying this fly on jighooks(1/80 oz(which I know causes it to become a "non-fly" for record fish.) But, its a killer using either rabbit, squirrel, and marabou. -p-

Hey, Don, could one wrap with lead wire as an alternative to the bead head?

Hey Dayhut...........glad to see you posting again, I see no reason why you couldn't sub some lead wire for the bead. I think I would tie a "fuzzy" head of some kind if I didn't use a bead......but it should work just fine....(we have got to get up to the lake soon) A good friend of mine has been catching some REALLY NICE Gills around the rocks in 10 feet of water, I know just the place he is talking about. We need to tie a few MM minnows with dumbbell eyes so we can get them down deeper...( I went to one of his fish fries, he cut some nice filets from those gills ) I was impressed coming from Lake Murray.................Don

I been using the marabou from cat toys. Its crappy quality but the gills are liking it.
I always get the rabbit fur and some strung marabou from the craft store too.
