I had a fantastic couple of hours catching 10" to 11" rainbow planters today. The fly that works on this lake is sub-surface non-bead headed size 12 to 14 mini leech.
I was using a Redington CT 2 wt. overlined with a 4 wt intermediate line and a tapered mono 5x 7.5' leader/tippet.
As I was fishing I thought about my 1 wt. sitting at home. Problem is I only have floating lines in 1 and 2 wt. but really need to be sub-surface. Previously I have tried using a floater with a 9' fluorocarbon leader/tippet as well as a floater with a sink tip on this rod. Neither of these setups produce the results as a straight intermediate line does.
Should I "graft" on 6 to 10 feet of a 4 wt. intermediate to a floater for my 1 wt. and use my traditional tapered mono leader/tippet? Or try so other concoction?
All thoughts and options are appreciated.

Build your own leaders with a section of T11 tied in between the butt and tippet.

If it were me, I would get a 3wt rod then get some WF3I line and skip the 1 and 2wt for such application.

Sasha what WF3I can you suggest? I'm looking around for one to use in the salt and so far all I can seem to find is the Rio InTouch Camolux.
Adam
Sorry for the slight hijack

Laguna Lake, From a 3-weight on up, there are many alternatives. When one gets to a 1-weight or below, the choices decrease sharply, especially when one feels that a tapered line is an absolute necessity. However, if you can settle for a level line and use come creativity, there are more alternatives. A while back there was a thread in the "Frugal fly fisherman" section called "An artificial silk line for a few bucks". Let's try this link: viewtopic.php?f=90&t=9353I personally have been using twisted nylon lines for a couple of years. After being coated with two or three coats of spar varnish, they function like intermediate lines in that they float when dressed and sink slowly with no dressing or when the dressing wears off. Some people have also used braided backing in the same way, but I don't know how well it sinks or floats. Good luck with your quest! Please let us know about your findings.

I have a 9m/27' Hends French Camou tapered leader (very long butt section) that I've been meaning to try with my 0 & 1wts. It too could probably be used as an intermediate, if treated with a sinking agent.

I'd wait and have a few drinks and then look on E-Bay and find an expensive new rod and line.
