Dont know how many people use split shot here, But I cant seem to find any that will stay on after a couple casts. I use them for trout beading a steak n' egg pattern. If any one has suggestions that would be appreciated.

Crimp them just above the loop knot. Use a heamostat crimp the open side in towards The line.

I can't get split shot to stay on no matter where I put them and in addition, I've found it very time consuming getting them clamped on.
Recently I started experimenting with tieing a small barrel swivel to my leader and them my tipped to the other end of of barrel swivel.
I think this is going to work for me.

If you clamp the split shot directly onto the tippet it weakens the mono.
I much prefer alternate nethods,,, dropper loop or ring/swivel with short pc of mono. If thw SS gets hungup you do not loose the fly abd tippett.

I never liked crimping anything to a tippet. I like the swivel idea. If you need something heavier, tryy a small metal bead pegged with a rubber band; it won't weaken the line. I've never tried it, but I imagine that a length of heavier monofilament nail knotted (with a long enough knot to support the shot) tightly to the tippet with the shot crimped to it might work.

I fished with split shot on a 8lb tippet for many years without the crimped shot ever damaging the mono to the extent that the line broke.I was fishing in strong currents for a fish that always took off like a bonefish when hooked. I mostly crimped with my teeth. 75 years old with all my faculties so far.

When fishing Ed Shenk sculpin flies used to put a split shot right against the knot up against the hook eye, sometimes looping the tippet twice around the split shot before crimping.
