Stumbled across the "The Jersey Angler" blog and looked at the instructions to tie a Bluegill Bug with craft foam. Nice little pattern that is simple to tie and lends itself to all sorts of modifications. "Jersey" recommended a size 10 hook, but my efforts with size 12 and 16 hooks have led to Mexican Tetras, Green Sunfish and Black Bass catches. The instructions indicated using bucktail, but my renditions were tied with maribou. Bright green and yellow sheet foam have proven to catch fish, the black version efforts are absolutely sinister looking and are patiently waiting to get tested.

Tried a version this morning created out of pink foam, orange legs and hot pink marabou all wrapped with white thread. Best yet response to this fun little pattern. Even made a few using blue foam, white tails and clear legs, those silly fish must be thinking damselfly account how quickly that pattern of colors was taken.

Some of my bluegill bug flys were starting to look fairly ratty from being chewed on by the sunfish. For the flys that still had good tails and legs, an experiment with super glueing a thin layer of foam to the top body section was performed. The idea to expand the life span of this fly was akin to a retread car tire . Found that not only did it look new again, but it sat better in the water and little highlights of different colors could be easily applied. A short test found that the silly sunfish were just as eager to grab the patched version as the original pattern.
