Hello Fellows:
I am considering chasing baby tarpon (20 pounds max) with my 1wt.
I more or less have bonefish figured out with the 1wt. A local has landed 50 pound tarpon on a 2wt, I am not sure how long it took though.
Would like to hear your thoughts on this.

Hope to see pictures of the success and reports of the hook ups that didn't make the capture. Bet that's going to take you deep into your backing. Your taking Ultralight to a new level.

I tried the same thing but oddly enough I couldn't find any Tarpon in Arizona . Darn the luck . GLTY .

Hopefully I can give it a shot this Saturday. I know where to find them that is like fishing in a pond... there are hundreds of them. Mostly 20 pounds or less although there are a few big ones from time to time.
I have landed them on my 6wt and on my 4wt. Not once they got into the backing. These are "back water", brackish water tarpon. Their fight is not as strong as the ones in 100% saltwater.
They do jump and put on a good fight, don't get me wrong. They may get me to a backing but, I do not expect to get deep into the backing with the 4wt or the 6wt.
Let's see what happens on the 1wt.

I would guess that hooksets would be the biggest problem with lighter gear. Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Hook sets are no problem. I'm throwing size 1 gamakatsu mullets. Landed 2, the second one didn't want to stay for the pic. They were not as large as I expected but, wind didn't let me target the bigger ones rolling in the distance.  Sent from my LG-H700 using Tapatalk

Sounds like a retired fly fishing shop owner's comments on taking an Orvis 1oz #2 weight tarpon fishing with a BBS II. Plenty of backing, but the rod will snap under extreme pressures exerted by chance a much larger tarpon; which would be far more likely than catching anyone of that bus load of naked oiled up cheerleaders !

Impressive, thanks for posting. How do you manage to cast a size 1 fly with a 1 wt rod, wind assist, short cast? Looking forward to seeing the fly if you can post a picture.

About 30 years ago I went to Christmas Island fishing for bone fish. This was about the time the Orvis 1 weight came out. One of the other groups had an Orvis 1 wt that the entire party tried out. It caught a LOT of bonefish that week we were down there. Needless to say we were all impressed.
Good luck with the baby tarpon, they are hard to find on the Madison or Missouri

Good luck with the baby tarpon, they are hard to find on the Madison or Missouri Thanks! People tend to underestimate light rods. Not long ago I got a 35 pound tarpon on a fiberglass 4wt and a clicker reel.

Les No but, I use baitfish patterns mostly made out of Congo hair.

Short leader, light hook, 2wt line and sparse baitish fly. I can cast 30ft with that setup provided there is low to no wind.
