Well I just spent over 6 months being a 24/7 trout bum with my brother in law. He retired this year and with my wife's permission we were trout bums all spring, summer and the one week of fall we got this year. Fished almost exclusively for native or carryover planted trout. In the high country, Upper Kern River before the Golden Trout Wilderness and in the Golden Trout Wilderness. My Brother in law has a camper so we were a week to 10days in, every other trip a week backpacking into the golden trout wilderness. For the upper Kern River and Golden Trout Wilderness it was 2 and 3 wt rod, fiberglass, Graphite, and yes even Bamboo. What did I learn, follow the hatch. Use Intermediate lines (Wolff Triangle Taper) and either furled tappered leaders sinking or floating. These combinations just seem to never fail. A long 7 ft 10in to 8ft rod seems to be ideal and rules out most bamboo but scores for S-glass and Graphite. Just some observations from over 180 days finish UL this year. Richard

I would love to do that but have about 20 years to go before fishing 3 months in a row is possible

Can you tell me more about why a rod over 8ft would be a problem?

Nice I wish I could fish that much on Upper Kern and GTW. I have fished 10 days in 2012 so far there. For Cali it is a relatively wide river. On the 20 mile section I use a 10ft to 8ft rod. Once you get further up by the forks and smaller creeks I will go 7-8 ft mostly bamboo. Beautiful place, I have to drive 270 miles each way, but well worth it. It can get Hot out there though during the summer.

Does "Intermediate lines" mean you fished emergers and streamers?
