I've never experienced it, but I've been told by folks that on NS ferrules the salts, etc. in the nose grease can damage the metal over time. It can also attract nastiness and eat away finish on other materials. I much prefer paraffin wax for ferrules on graphite and 'glass as there's no risk for potential moldy nastiness on my ferrules as long as you keep them clean.

Still use it at times. Don't always have a candle handy, but my nose is always easy to find.

Each season, I start by candle-waxing all the rods, but round about august, its sometimes gone, and its back to the old nose-grease for a streamside treatment. I just assumed that's the real reason there's such a nice notch between the nostril and the cheek, and why those highly developed oil glands seem to be located there. That's what I call Intelligent Design! In that same vein, the armpit of a grown man is just the right size to store a bottle of Gehrke's Gink on a cold day. Not only does it keep the Gink nice and liquid, but if you store it in your right armpit, that constant pressure of the upper arm against your body helps improve your flycasting. Bonus: no one EVER asks to borrow your Gink. brent

Chris who ever told ya it has corrosive tendencies must have had a weird metabolism I've used nose grease for stream side application for many moons, now that I have a beard gotta watch I don't wipe it off , never had any negative effect on anything ....I've used it on pipes, pistol grips, rods, reels, furniture, belt buckles ....natures WD40 I call it ... I envy people with big noses, they have more nose grease than others.. we now have to find a way to package it ... Paul I hate using paraffin wax it attracts more dirt & crap and builds up layers of hard wax .. Nose wax when I need it !!

I honestly didn't know what you meant; I'd never heard the term. I learn a lot on this site. I used forehead grease for a long time. But not long ago I read on a rod manufacturer's site that the dirt that accumulates in it, and the additional dirt it attracts is not good for ferrules and recommended paraffin. So I carry a couple of birthday candles in a pocket in my chest pack.

For years now I actually never even break down a rod. I have them all on pegs with their own reel and when I want to switch what I plan to fish it is just a matter of swapping out rods. I also bought a van for fishing and have a rack set up that will hold six assembled rods Makes my life much easier
