Local shop has a case hardened Henry chambered in .45-70. I was thinking about picking one up as a “just for the hell of it” purchase. Is anybody here familiar with this specific rifle? Pros, Cons, etc.

Sasha, I found a great buy on a Henry .45-70 with an octagon barrel; I was sorely tempted!!! I just couldn't justify the expense at the time. And I already have a .458 SOCOM SBR, with virtually identical ballistics. Although I have no personal experience with that particular rifle, I did a bit of checking and found no one with anything negative to say about it. I have shot the Marlin .45-70 lever guns; they are a hoot! My old chief carried one of the Marlins on duty, and carried six rounds on his belt. Folks noticed them!

I'd say go for it. You only go around once; might as well get dizzy...........

I never did end up getting the Henry. In the end I decided to get some other things instead.

I currently have 3 .45-70's, a Marlin Guide Gun, a Marlin 1895 Cowboy, and a Shiloh Sharps 1874 Hartford Model.

If I was wanting a .45-70, I'd do one of two things. I'd either search for a used JM-marked 1895, or I'd bide my time until Ruger starts cranking out Marlins and look at one of those 1895's. I prefer Marlin to the Henry's.

Avoid Remlins (Marlins made by Remington).
